Transition to whole milk?

Did you make the change gradually by mxing formula and milk or did you go cold turkey?  What has been your experience?

Re: Transition to whole milk?

  • I went cold turkey with Cadence per the pedi's recommendation. She has done fine with the whole milk. Now, if I could just find a way to wean her from needing her milk warm all the time :)

  • I started when he was around 11 months.  At the time, he was on 4 bottles of formula.  I basically switched 1 bottle to milk and the other bottles for formula.  When I saw that he was ok with that, I switched it to 2 bottles of milk and 2 bottles of formula and so on....  He did really well with it that way.  I also was eliminating bottles at the same time but for the life of me, can't remember how I did it at the same time.  I just know he was on all milk and no bottles by the time his birthday rolled around.  Good luck!
  • Tracigator:  His daycare teacher wants me to transition the same as you mentioned.
  • We went cold turkey w/ milk and no bottles right at 1 year.  We never did milk in the bottle, it was always in the sippy cup. The first few days were kinda hard moreso for me than her. DD could have cared less about losing the bottles, but she was thrown by the milk in the sippy. She was used to water in her sippy and that was what she expected!  She didn't drink much milk the first few days and I was all worried and stressed, but she worked it out on her own and became adjusted to it and was completely fine. I think looking back I would have offered her milk in her sippy around 11 months to start getting her used to having it in her sippy as opposed to just water.

  • We went cold turkey...about a week before Caleb's birthday he finished his last can of formula, so I started then...he noticed NO difference at all!

I CAN NOT believe it's that time already for Connor...boy time flies!

  • I started when Ethan was 11 months old and about every other day, I'd take away two ounces of formula for two ounces of whole milk.  In less than two weeks, he was completely on whole milk.

  • Gradually.  I tried a sippy of 100% whole milk and Ridge wanted nothing to do with it so I mixed it for about two weeks gradually putting in more whole milk.  Good luck!
  • Thank you ladies!  I think I'm going to try mixing it first then replace 1 bottle a day.  I'm afraid if I start off with 1 bottle it would have to be one at daycare and if he has a bad reaction I'll have to pronto to get him since he only has 1 bottle at home after daycare which is his night bottle.

Mom2caleb:  It is about that time and I CAN NOT believe it!

  • We went cold turkey and it was so easy - he took the milk right away and we had no problem!  I gave it to him in the bottle though and we STILL haven't managed to transition to the sippy cup.  But the switch to milk was so much easier than I expected!
