1st Trimester

no weight gain until 20 weeks

I'm within a healthy BMI range, etc. My doctor told me I should not begin to gain weight until I am 20 weeks. I'm up a pound from my pre-preg weight right now at week 8. I've been lucky with food aversions and m/s. No weight gain at all seems unrealistic to me. Has anyone else been told not to gain weight until week 20?

Re: no weight gain until 20 weeks

  • That is crazy!  I am currently down a few pounds so I may not gain weight from my pre-preg weight for a few weeks, but that's only because I am sick a lot.  Just eat as healthy as you can and your body will gain the weight it needs.

  • Ummm, NO!! Eat healthy and if you gain weight, you gain weight. I have never heard a doctor say that before.

  • Does your Dr. think it's 1956?

    Seriously...I'd find a new Dr.

  • That is really unhealthy and bizarre advice. I would consider switching obs.
  • No I was not told that, and I would be kind of wary of an OB who put those kinds of "restrictions" on weight gain. That said I do know that it is totally possible to not gain weight until then, I just don't think it's necessary for a healthy pregnancy.

Seriously, maybe your OB is awesome, but I would really reconsider staying with them for your pregnancy. I didn't gain any weight until 16 weeks last time, but ended up gaining 51 lbs total (yikes!!!). A great deal of that was bloat, that basically fell off when I had DS. If my OB had said anything and I mean anything about my weight gain, at any point I would have been totally and completely devasted (um yeah, I was pretty emotional towards the end Wink). I just don't think it's their place to comment on it unless it's actually having an impact on your health or your baby's health.

  • that seems crazy! ive heard you shouldnt really gain weight in your first tri, because you dont really need to be increasing your calories yet - but that 3-5 lbs weight gain in first tri is normal. i would just try to be healthy and eat when you're hungry & not worry about the scale.

your doctor is insane... you should consider another doc.

people gain at different rates and at different points in their pregnancies... this is an unreasonable, unhealthy expectation.

    I am the 99%.
  • Not trying to be rude, but if you are overweight they will tell you that. Otherwise your Dr. is crazy.
  • I've heard 3-5 lb in the 1st tri, then 3-4 lbs per month there after...

  • I would switch doctors.

It's not unheard of to not gain until 20 weeks (I'm still down a pound) but I also wouldn't want that restriciton.

  • Did he say what he expects you to gain the rest of your pregnancy? I'd really consider switching.

I know alot of people lose and don't really gain much till then but I've also read it's normal to gain about 3-5 in 1st tri and then about 1lb a week after that..

  • Thanks for not making me feel like a hungry, hungry hippo! I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this could be a bit old-fashioned. As I said I'm in the healthy BMI range, the upper part of it but it's still in the range, so I'm not overly concerned about weight gain.

I got to a group practice and he was just one of the doctors in the 7 doctor practice. I have an appt in 4 weeks and will see a different doc so I will get their take. Switching OBs isn't really an option for me due to living in a small town and insurance. There is only 1 other practice in town and I've heard bad things about their care. So, I'm going to sit tight and follow the advice in all the books. Eat healthy, don't go overboard, aim to gain no more than 1-2 first tri, etc.

  • I'm shocked....find a new dr STAT
  • I've heard that an obese woman (BMI over 30) should not gain more than 15lbs (all of which should be towards the end of the pregnancy).  However, it does not sound like that is your situation.  If you are in the normal range (BMI 20-25), I was told 25-35 pounds is good.  My doctor said 3-5 in the first trimester and then 1lb per week after that.  I couldn't imagine going 20 weeks without any weight gain.
