Re: caffeine

  • My DH has stopped drinking it too so that helps because we dont have caffeine in the house now

  • I cut it out as soon as I got my BFP, i had a nasty headache but once that was over, I was fine.
  • My doc says that 1 or 2 cups of coffee or cans of soda a day are ok, but if you want to wean yourself off caffeine I would recommend slowly reducing yuor intake and drink something that is similar to your normal caffeine drink, i.e. root beer instead of dr. pepper.

  • I bought 1/2 caff coffee beans while we were TTC, which I drank about the equivalent of 2 cups of regular coffee in the morning down from about 4-6 cups of regular coffee before we were TTC.  Now I went down to tea which is a little more caffeine than a can of soda pop, so it says on the box which I only have one tea bag worth of liquid a day.  I have nurses in the family that have said it is safe to drink 2-3 cups of caffeinated coffee/tea a day, but of course every woman is different so you would probably want to ask your Dr. about that.  Long story short, I am personally still drinking a small amount of caffeine in the morning.

     Good luck to you!

  • Nope, no trouble at all because I am not kicking it...
  • My doctor told me that I could have 1 caffeinated drink a day. So, instead of caffeine tea, I get decaffe. Or, for soda, I get instead of regular coke, caffeine free coke.

  • in one day i either have one can of diet pepsi or a coffee with half decaf half regular.  since i blended my coffee, its been easy.

  • I used to have at least 3 cups of coffee a day and im down to about 3-4 week. It was really hard making the switch to decaf for the first couple weeks but alternating days( decaf and reg ) really helped me. Plus I made smaller cups which gave me the taste but not all the caffeine I'd been having before.

    Hope that helps some !!

  • I used to have a couple cups of coffee a day and would drink iced tea like a fiend when we went out to eat (which was a lot). ?Now I allow myself one cup of coffee in the morning. ?We don't go out as much, but I don't get tea when we do because I drink so quickly. ?I'll opt for a diet soda and limit how much or get a caffeine free soda. ?I'll admit though - I got headeaches in the beginning and sometimes in the afternoon I REALLY want a cup of coffee....but I keep reminding myself that the possible risk isn't worth it. ?

  • I cut it out up until a week or two ago. I had a few cravings for a diet soda and took care of them, but I looked at them as any other craving, not something I had trouble leaving behind, but momentary satisfaction.
  • I have trouble when they recommend pregnant women not to have more than 60 mg of caffeine a day.  I am a physician assistant student and for my Health Promotion Disease Prevention class we examined two studies on caffeine and miscarriage that had different results.  The first was published in The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology which found an increased risk.  However, they only got a 38% response rate from those asked to participate (acceptable is usually around 60-70%) and asked women via interview after they already miscarried how much they consumed.  The study is poorly designed because it allowed for bias from the interviewer, the mother thinking "yes this might explain why this happened" and from not using the right amount of subjects to begin with.  This is the study that the new caffeine restriction recommendations was based on.

The second article was published in the journal Epidemiology and found no correlation between caffeine and miscarriage until over 348 mg/dl. The study was put together much better, with 3 cities, a good number of minorities, public and private hospitals, and all levels of socioeconomic status and ages. Epidemiology as a science field examines populations and correlations, so their job all day is to ensure that a study adequately measures what it is intended to measure.

I am not telling you to go out and order a vente whatever from Starbucks, I just want you to be informed because many times, a medical professional will resrict something to cover his own behind.  If they didn't tell you to stop drinking soda or whatever and (God forbid) you have a m/c, they can be sued for not disclosing the potential for danger. Read up on why doctors make the choices they do, the better you are informed, the better care you will receive.
