Less chance of miscarriage after seeing/hearing hb?

We had our ultrasound on Friday and we got to see the babies heartbeat-it was 149 bpm.

I've heard once you see/hear the heartbeat, the chance of a miscarriage decreases...is this true?

Yes, since around 80% of m/c in the first tri are blighted ovums...no hb.

For women with no vaginal bleeding, most estimates suggest that the odds or having a miscarriage after seeing a heartbeat are about 4%.

For women with vaginal bleeding but also a detected heartbeat on ultrasound, risk of miscarriage is about 13% according to one study.

One study found that about 17% of women with a history of recurrent miscarriages will miscarry after seeing a heartbeat on the ultrasound.

Mothers over 35 also face significant miscarriage risk after ultrasound detects a heartbeat, even though the risk does drop after detecting the heartbeat. A 1996 study found that women over 36 have a 16% risk of miscarriage at this point, and women over 40 have a 20% risk.

Where did you find this statistic? Everything I've read has said that blighted ovums account for between 45-55% of first trimester miscarriages.  And a blighted ovum is different than not having a heartbeat. The embyro never develops in a blighted ovum. It is entirely possible for an embryo to develop but not have a hb at the first u/s (whether it never started or had a heartbeat and then passed away).

It drops significantly, between 1-3%. ?More in the 1% range if the heartbeat is heard later in 1st Tri.

I think the rate drops the most significantly right before you hit the 2nd trimester.  Try not to stress out, I know it's tough.. I lost my baby at 13 weeks, you hear about people having late losses, but it's better to stay positive and not focus on something bad happening.

After my first ultrasound at 8 weeks, my doctor said that the chance for m/c went from about 20% to about 4% after seeing the healthy heartbeat at this time in pregnancy. ?This was very reassuring to me as I had an early loss with my previous pregnancy.

    Good luck!?
