Breastfeeding

When do you pump when your at home?

I try to pump when DD is sleeping or in between feedings.  My LC told me that the breast is never empty...it's like a tiolet, there is always something there so even if you pump and then breastfeed, the baby will get milk.  But if I pump too close to DD's feeding, she gets really pissed when she latches on.  I guess it's because it's not coming out fast enough for her (because if express manually milk does come out).

Anyone else have this problem?  And my overall question is should I just let her keep trying to get milk (even though she gets pissed) or should I just give her a bottle?  I've been giving her a bottle (of BM).

Re: When do you pump when your at home?

  • For a missed feeding, I pump as close to the feeding time as possible. Otherwise, I actually pump right AFTER I feed DS. I don't get as much milk (so, not so good if you're trying to build up a supply of bottles for when you're not at home), but I usually get 1-2oz.

  • I pump in the morning because I heard that you have the most milk then but I could be wrong.  I've been getting about 2oz in 30 min with the morning pump.

  • I haven't missed a feeding, but I'd pump as close to the feeding as possible if I did.  I also pump after ds eats...if I wait about 45 minutes then I get between 1-2 oz, which is more than I'd get if I pumped right after.  I then have about 1-2 hours before he will eat again!

  • I pump in the morning because you are the most full then.  I do single side feedings, so she eats on one side and I pump the other.  I usually get 2+ oz in about 10 minutes or so.  Then at her next feeding she eats off the pumped side.

If it has been more than an hour since you pumped I would say to let her keep trying at the breast, but I'm not an expert.  Does your hospital have an LC you could call and ask?
