Baby Names

Agreed. Finally on a first name...

So finally we have agreed on Adeline for my grandmother's aunt.  Now the mn is up.  Two considerations-

Adeline Joy (joy is my grandmother)

Adeline Marian (Marian for my great granmother)

FWIW- DD#1 is Alex Darris and this one's twin will be John Morgan.

Re: Agreed. Finally on a first name...

  • I vote for Adeline Joy...Adeline Marian as too similar sounding of an ending to me.
  • I like it.

How are you pronouncing "Adeline?"  If it's a short "i" like "lyn" I don't think Marian works.  If it's a long "i" like "line," Marian works.  Joy sounds good with either pronunciation.

It's a long /i/... I love the idea of Marian b/c I had a deep connection with her, but it sounds mouthy to me... thanks.

To be honest, it is a little bit of a mouthful, but certainly not to any extreme.  How often to we use our full names anyway?  And it will sound impressive when read out loud at her high school graduation.  I say use it if it has a special meaning for you.
  • Adeline Joy flows the best IMO.
  • I like both but I think Adeline Joy flows better

  • How would you pronounce Marian?  This is my grandmother's name also she pronounces it like Marion.  I think Adeline Marian (pronounced Adeline Marion) sounds ok, I don't think Adeline Marian (pronounced like MaryAnn) goes well.  But in the end I don't think it's the biggest deal how well it flows.  How often are you going to be saying her full name?  I think as long as its not horribly rhymey or incorporating the same names/sounds middle names can work well with most names.  An example of something I wouldn't like:  Nathan Ethan, but Nathaniel Ethan could work.
