At 7 weeks they did an abdominal as well as a transvaginal. She decided to do a transvaginal to get a better view since it is a little less fuzzy, and to look closer at fallopian tubes/ovaries (I was at risk for ectopic pregnancy).
I'm not sure, but I'd recommend transvaginal. I had an abdominal then it wasn't clear enough so they did transvag. I got charged for both separately. Transv was I think twice as expensive, but I got charged for both, so I'd rather have transv from the get go. Just my opinion.

Are you worried about the transvaginal? It really isn't uncomfortable and you get a nice clear picture without someone pushing on your bladder/bloat. I prefer it. Which... might be weird? Ha...
My first ultrasound was 8w2d and they did both. The tech start abdominally to check on an ovarian cyst, but she needed to do the vaginal one too to get the measurements she needed.
I got one at 8 weeks transvaginal and at 11 weeks abdominal so I'm not sure. Just know that the transvaginal one isn't bad at all and it is great to see the baby.
Both of my u/s so far have been transvaginal. At 9w she didn't even try the abdominal, and this past visit at 13w she tried to see the heartbeat abdominally and she couldn't get a clear picture, so she went transvaginally.
I agree with PPs ... the transvaginal doesn't hurt or anything.

abdominal at 10 weeks, but only because we couldn't hear the heartbeat really well, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten one until 21 weeks!
