1st Trimester

8 weeks measuring at 6 weeks :(

My hubby and I had out first ObGyn appointment this morning.  We were so excited about it, but things went kind of south really fast, and I wanted to ask you guys if any of you might have experienced anything similar.

So - our Doc was not originally going to do an U/S, but I kind of pressured her into it because we were going to tell our families this weekend, and I didnt want to tell our fam until we were 100% certain everything looked ok in there.  So, the Doctor eventually agreed, and sent us the Sonogram room. The Sonogram tech found the Sac, but didnt see or hear a heartbeat, and said the sac is only measuring at about 6 weeks, when I should be past 8 weeks.

I realize this is most likely bad news, but I was curious if anybody went through anything similar?  We have another U/S in one week to see if there has been any progress.

I've had no bleeding.  Yesterday, my tummy hurt a little (it was that feeling when you're wearing pants that are too tight)

  • Oh, I hope everything is okay. ::hugs::

  • I had this happen.... and my dates were off. I must have ovulated late or something.

I thought I was almost 8((my original due date was oct 1st) Went to ER for some spotting... was told the sac only measured 6 weeks and was empty. ER told me I miscarried.

A week and a half later  they saw the babe safe and sound with a strong heartbeat. My due date was changed to October 13th.

  • I don't have any experience.  I just wanted to give hugs and I'll be praying everything's ok
  • What kind of u/s was it? If it was a tummy one - you could seem smalled than if they did an internal one. The same thing happened to me. (see blog) I'd just wait it out and not stress.

  • We've been measuring 1 week behind from the beginning, but we have been seeing progress, and we think we are behind because we conceived late in my cycle.  It is still possible that things are okay being 2 weeks behind-- you would have had to conceive very late in your cycle (especially if you have irregular or long cycles, this is possible), but this DOES happen sometimes.  Until you know anything else or until you have severe cramping or bleeding, try to stay positive.  The less stress you feel, the better it is for your body and the baby.  It is so scary to hear that what the doctor sees on the ultrasound is not what is supposed to be there-- I was so scared because my u/s (at 5 weeks) had nothing in it at all; honestly, I was convinced I was going to miscarry because around the same time I had horrible back pain.  We're all here for you while you wait this out!  ((hugs))

  • Did they do any blood work today? They should be able to test the levels today and again in 2 days (or 3 days if over the weekend). If the levels don't have a significant rise, that might be an indication that the pregnancy is not successful. I hope and pray that that is not the case.

  • Thanks for all your support, girls.

They did both an internal U/S and and external.  The Sac was visible, and there was something tiny attached to the Sac, but nothing else was there.  I was pretty paranoid going in because I haven't "felt" pregnant, aside from my sore boobs.

HerHighness: your story really adds a sliver of sunshine to my day today, thank you so much for sharing.  I guess I won't know anything until late next week.  They drew some blood, and they will probably check my hormone levels, so that may be another indicator of what's going on.

The worst part of all this is that it was a surprise pregnancy, and the first few days, my hubby and I were talking about how we're not ready.  We weren't really excited until about 1 week after getting the news..  Now, this baby is all I want.

  • And yes, I have another U/S scheduled next Friday at 10 AM.  Hopefully the bloodwork will be in before then.  Please say a prayer for my baby!  It's amazing how this online community can be such a strong support system.
  • we're going through a similar situation.  i thought i was 6 weeks , 4 days when i went in for sono on monday...i just wasn't feeling good.

they measured a sac at just under 6 weeks with nothing in it.  i go back for a repeat sono on monday.  i'm pretty sure on my date so i'm trying to be hopeful.  there's lots of girls on here with similar stories that turned out well so i'm hoping for the best.

    you're in my thoughts...try to relax (i know...easier said...)

  • When I went for my first appointment, they thought I was 8 weeks- but the u/s measured 6w2d (transvag).?

Everything has looked great since- please don't stress yet (even though that's easier said than done). It's very possible you just ovulated later than you thought. Good luck!
  • This is the exact reason why I don't want to have to wait until 10.5 weeks for my first appointment. What if something's wrong and we don't even know it because we haven't had any kind of appointment or blood work done. It's just scary.

Sending you prayers and lots of sticky-baby-waves!

  • RCollier - they originally weren't going to give me an U/S until 20 weeks!!  Just because of my medical history and age, they didn't consider me a risk, I guess.  The Doctor was hesitant to even do it today, at 8 weeks.  I think Insurance companies are mostly to blame, but that's another story.

I have a crazy MIL who would blame ME if she ever found out I miscarried.  No joke.  My husband even admits it.  We were going to tell our families this Sunday, and I begged my doctor to do the U/S so that we won't risk telling our families about an unhealthy pregnancy.  Thank GOD I insisted on the U/S.

For now, my husband I and are the only ones who know (and you guys, of course!)

  • I wish I had a better story to tell, but our last pregnancy we lost measured behind.  I went in at 7w3d and the baby only measured 6w1d and only had a flicker of a heartbeat.  I was really hoping I had just ovulated late, but when I went back at 9w0d for another ultrasound, the baby measured exactly the same and there wasn't even a flicker of a heartbeat anymore.  I also had lost my pregnancy symptoms by then.  I barely had any m/s, and with my son I has terrible m/s.  A couple days later I had a D&C.  This pregnancy I knew things were better when I had m/s bad again.  I'm sorry hon.  I don't want to be Debbie Downer or anything, and I really hope things will work out better for you than they did for me, but I would still be prepared for bad news, just in case.  Good luck!!!  (((HUGS)))

  • Does the dr want to see you again in a week? I hope they do, that will answer a lot of questions. My guess is either by then your body will have started to miscarry or if you go back in a week and they do an ultrasound and they really were just off on your date there should be a heart beat. 7 days seems like forever! So hang in there.  I thought I was 10 weeks and the baby measured 7w3d and had a heart beat and I ended up having a miscarriage.

Hang in there, it sucks to play the waiting game. If God forbid you do have a mc go to the m/p loss board those ladies are the most amazing group of ladies out there. Good Luck! You can page me on success after a loss if you need me!

  • I am in almost the same position.  LMP says I should be nine weeks, OB said he was seeing what he would expect at 7.  He has a mini, portable ultrasound machine in his office that, in his words, is "low tech" so he is sending me for a full ultrasound at the hospital, it's in about half an hour.  I wasn't surprised, I was charting and knew I O'ed 12-ish days late.  I wouldn't worry too much about it until you have the full ultrasound. :) They'll probably just tell you that your conception date was off.  Was your gestational sac round?  My OB made a big deal about mine being nice and round and how that indicated it was probably a healthy pregnancy.  Good luck!  Keep us updated on what you hear!
  • We are having a surprise baby, too:-)  After the original BFP and shock wore off, I started bleeding.  Found out that I have a subchorionic hemorrhage during my 1st u/s.  They saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac (which was the little thing you described as being attached.)  That's the first sign of pregnancy and apparently that is what helps nourish the embryo the first week or so.  I didn't hear a heartbeat that time because there was no embryo.  That radiologist made me feel as though the odds were against me, and I left discouraged.  Like you, the shock had worn off and the excitement had begun.

A week later, I went back for another u/s.  This time they found a heartbeat and they realized I was measuring behind what I originally thought.  I go back on Tuesday when I will officially be 7 weeks so we hope to hear the heartbeat again!

Hope this helps for you to hold out a little hope:-)  You never know!

    I had that happen--thought i was 7 weeks and measured 5

we went back and now I am almost 10--saw the heart beat twice, they just moved my EDD, even though it doesnt quite make sense to me based on when im pretty sure I concieved, they also said that if implantation happens late that can throw things off a bit too . . . im not too concerned as everything else is normal, --doubling HcG levels, and last three U/S had the baby progressing just fine! good luck!

  • I went for my first U/S at 7w5d and the doc said the baby was measuring 6w1d, so i know your heartache (I temped and charted so I know when I O'd).  We did see the baby and the heartbeat which was reasuring.  I go back on the 10th to see how the baby is progressing.  At that time, I will be 10w exactly, so we'll see what happens.

     Best of luck to you.

  • My first ultrasound was at what I thought was 7 weeks, and they said I looked like 5 weeks (just saw the sac). I had had a chemical pregnancy a few months before, so I was sooooo nervous.

I went back two weeks later and there was a little jellybean with a heartbeat!

Hopefully your dates are off and everything is fine! Best wishes!

  • Popping over from 3rd trimester...This exact thing happened to me. I was actually only about 4 or 5 weeks when I thought I was 8. My body was way outta whack. I know it's nerve wracking, and you're in my prayers. But something just turned out to be off calculation wise...I hope it's the same for you!!
  • Don't give up.  This is why a lot of drs don't like to give ultrasounds early.  Different people develop differently.  Give it a little more time.  good luck to you.
