Anyone delay starting solids until 7months?

Anyone delay starting solids until closer to, or after, 7 months?  DD just turned 5 months and I was originally planning to slowly start introducing solids (homemade) at 6months, but after reading up on kellymom.com yesterday, I'm considering delaying it until she's closer to 7 months.

For what it's worth my DH's neice, and his mother, both have a wide array of allergies and they regularly "puff up" and get hives etc. If delaying solids can help in anyway to prevent DD from developing allergies like that, I'd like to do what I can.

Thoughts?

Re: Anyone delay starting solids until 7months?

  • We started at 6 months but DD didn't actually start to enjoy eating them until about 7.5 months.  So if you think that delaying solids might help with allergies I would definitely do it.  You're not going to cause any damage or developmental delay by waiting another month or two to start.

  • We are waiting till 6 not 7 months but I understand why you want to wait and think that is a very smart choice
  • We started at 6 months.  I didn't follow any "rules" just started when he showed signs of wanting more than his bottle.  I followed his cues.  As for allergies, my husband has a peanut allergy, I have environmental allergies, and I have cousins who have severe food allergies.  So far my son has shown no allergy to anything we've given him (all homemade).  My pediatrician and every book I read on homemade baby food said there is no benefit to waiting past 6 months.  I think it's a personal choice and you know what's best.
