Unless it's egregious and constant, I'd never point it out, but yes, it does annoy me. ?It's hard-wired into me; I'm a former English teacher.?
Of course we all make the odd spelling error if we're typing fast or whatever; but when it's constant (especially things like "they're" "there" and "their"), it gets under my skin. ??
It wouldn't annoy me if I thought it was a typo b/c someone was typing too fast, but it seems clear that most of those errors are because people aren't well educated and don't know the correct grammatical rules and can't explain why one word is right and the other is wrong. ?The poor kids are doomed.
FWIW, as a teacher, I had countless students whose parents probably had no idea the difference between "their/there/they're" and yet they themselves were able to be honor students and have done just fine for themselves.
Hardly "doom".
And seriously, if you judge an entire person's life and their family's future based on their grammar and usage on a message board, you're probably a bit "judgier" than is necessary. ?I'd recommend a hobby...
It doesn't bother me at all, but I do notice it. I know plenty of people who are talented and educated and just happen to be poor spellers, so I don't look down on someone b/c of bad spelling and grammar.

I notice typos, misuses of grammar and syntax and and does annoy me to a certain point. I think pointing out a typo when you're flaming someone is a lame tactic to one-up someone, so I rarely do it. The posts and posters that annoy me are the ones who regularly don't punctuate properly and have terrible grammar. I'm sure we can all think of a few on this board! I just tend to skip their posts instead of take out my frustration on them.

Bwhahahahah!
ATTENTION MOTHERS EVERYWHERE! If you forget an apostrophe, your KIDS WILL BE SCARRED FOR LIFE.
And actually, I think that is grounds for CPS to get involved. For Realzies. (oops, my kid is REALLY doomed now)
"No, I could care less" - HisBetterHalf, true typos don't bother me. Hell I type fast and I often get letters out of order or spaces where they shouldn't be.
liket his.
But straight out errors - "rediculous", or "I could care less" or "theyre" for "their" ... to me that shows the poster is not very well educated, perhaps not even truly literate.
If it is a post about pee or diapers or fever etc I will not comment on the error and try to help as best I can.
If it is claiming to know a whole lot about a complex scientific subject? Then I laugh. Probably "aloud" as in I post it. But even if I don't post it, I can't help laughing. People who spell "rediculous" are not able to understand peer reviewed scientific journals. In fact the standard is a whole lot higher, but at a minimum those people are way way below the audience level.
Just to annoy Sarah I will make the claim that no one who spells "rediculous" or writes "I went to see them kids" is ever an honours student. Some spelling problems in super bright people whose bent is not English? Sure. But rediculous and a few other markers are the errors that only people who are not very educated make. They may well be bright, but they won't be able to make anything of it. And I'm not saying you can ALWAYS tell the difference between the types of errors, but some you definitely can.

This is exactly what I've been thinking all night. This whole argument started because RBP corrected her spelling and told her a question about a friends kid was really just a way to say my kid is better than yours. Ok, so you want to show everyone you're a better speller?

Thanks for calling me out. As you know, I really don't care anyway. Oh and by the way I am quite educated and literate. TYVM.
LMAO! I love people's sweeping generalizations about people and their education based on a message on a message board.
For what it's worth, one of my good friends, who is a brilliant, world renowned physician, with many, many, many publications in scientific journals (ever hear of Nature? is THE WORST e-mail typer ever. Sometimes I have to call her because I have no idea what she really meant.
Smart people make stupid mistakes when typing fast when it really doesn't matter.
Eh, I had an economics teacher in high school who was brilliant and he couldn't correctly spell his way through a sentence. ? I never judged him for it; sometimes he asked me to proof-read assignments before he copied and handed them out. ?
People have quirks. ?Poor spelling/grammar/usage might be annoying, but it's not a blanket sign of ignorance, in my opinion. ??
Smart people make stupid mistakes when typing fast when it really doesn't matter.
Agreed. I base my opinions on WHAT people say, as opposed to only how they say it on here. It just doesn't matter to some people if they spell things correctly or word things properly. It doesn't mean they are ignorant hill-billies, or that someone who takes the time to proof-read their posts to make sure they are correct is a genius taking time off from their renowned work as a rocket scientist.

It doesn' really bother me because I spazz out a lot in posts and will use the wrong their/they're/there even though I know which one is correct and sometimes I'll go back and notice that a sentence I wrote really doesn't even make sense. It's usually because
a. I am rushing
b. my typing skills actually suckass bigtime
c. I don't proof
d. I think I am a tad dyslexic though I've never been tested
Those who think you can't tell the difference between a brilliant but dyslexic person and a hillbilly? You're selling yourself short. You can tell 99% of the time, even online. It is about tone and content as well as the spelling and grammar but those ARE indicators, and different errors are different markers.

Honestly, MMML, there are often times that I can't quite understand exactly wtf you are talking about. You seem to get ahead of yourself and your sentence-structure suffers for it. I'm sure you're every bit as educated as you claim to be, but even YOU don't always come off that way.

I identify it right away and I think it's bad to do it at work, but I don't care if people do it on here. Even if I make a typo, I might or might not go back and edit.

this. Word for word. Other than the whole English teacher thing. I almost became an English teacher. (dai, I really used to be good at it!)
i was trying to say that no- typos do not bother me... but people writing/saying "I could care less" does- lol.
it's "I could NOT care less" .... b/c if you COULD care less- then it means you do still care.
Well I guess that every SINGLE person that I know or have grown up with, including teachers, professors, etc is a dummy then because I have NEVER heard a person say I could NOT care less. I guess I'm "doomed". Hahaha... (yet again, I do not care!)

I really hope people don't care... I nest at work -quickly- I don't have time to proofread and I make spelling errors all the time b/c of it.
Don't judge me, I have an edumacation, I swears it.
LOL--a bit dramatic, gibs??
