xp: feeding from one side at each feeding

I hadn't been doing this at first, I had been switching in between.  But since last night I have been having him just eat from one side at each feeding.  I know a lot of people do this.  Will it effect my supply in anyway?  Do I need to pump the other breast?  Anything else I need to know about this technique?

Thanks

  • I've started doing this because I think he was having issues with foremilk/hindmilk.  Doesn't seem to make much of a difference in my opinion.  Just that I look a little lopsided when he's ready to eat!

  • Since he's so young still, you can probably go without pumping the other breast, unless he's going down for a long sleep - you may start to leak.  If you'll be returning to work, you may want to pump to start building up a supply.  BM is all about supply and demand - the more it's demanded, the more that's produced.  DD typically drinks from one side at a time, and ditto with the pp, that's great for getting the hind milk.  I think medical professionals are starting to get away from the "15 min/breast" thing.  Some baby-mom relationships need both breasts, tho.  Just keep an eye on those wet diapers and your LO's hunger cues.

  • I've been doing this since he was a week old and have been able to get away with not pumping the other side most of the time.  Some days I do have to pump the other side and I just freeze it.
  • I do this.  I try to pump the other side after he nurses.  Not because I'm concerned about my supply but because (a) it's more comfortable and (b) I'm always trying to keep up with his bottles for daycare.
