Anybody thinking of starting their own home-based Biz?

Since finding out about my little Poppy, I have started putting a business plan together to start my own home-based business, and I'll hopefully launch it when my Maternity leave ends.  I cant stand the thought of leaving my baby in a daycare to return to a job that I already hate.

I'm curious if any of you are looking into making a similar career jump, and if so, what it is?  Mine will be an eCommerce store.

  • What are you going to sell?

  • I'm going to try to make stuff and sell it on etsy. I already sell stuff, but I just don't have the time to devote to my store right now. I might also do web and blog design from home. I just want to make a little extra money. Daycare cost, plus driving so far away from home, and DH's and my opposite schedules just wouldn't work for us as a family. We'll see what happens though later this year. :-)

  • I started selling Lia Sophia Jewelry a few years back and then lost my momentum when I moved. I'm hoping to get back into that. I have a part scheduled for a couple weeks from now and I'm really hoping it will help launch my business. My friend/manager joined up just a few months before me and she made over $50,000 last year and she basically works part time hours. That, my friend, is my new goal!!

  • I'm not working from home but I am going back to doing hair so at least I can make my own hours.  The thought of asking someone for permission to pick up my sick child is just too much for me.  Plus with the cost of daycare I would just be working so I could pay for daycare which is backward.
  • I'll be selling specialty wedding products on a really cute and girly website.  It was an idea I had been toying with for the last year because I hated my job so much.  I had already hired somebody to design my website (cost was about $2,000), and now I'm in the process of finding my products, adding them to the website, putting my business plan together, etc.  I was debating launching before my baby arrives, but if I did that, I wouldn't have maternity leave, which would be pretty dumb on my part.

  • i already work one day a week as a freelance web and graphic designer (the other 4 days i work for a multimedia company doing the same)... i would LOVE to go completely freelance, especially considering the cost of day care and just not wanting to be away from the baby so much, but it is really hard to start your own biz- especially the first year- most people say that the first year of a new business, you are more likely to lose money then gain... sighhh... we are cash strapped enough as it is... let alone a baby and less income.

i dunno what to do... i would love to though! hopefully! thank god i have 8 months to figure it out!

  • I was thinking I would love to have my own event coordinating business that I can run from my home!  I love planning things like weddings and showers and chirstmas partys and I would be able to do that and then pick the events I want to do once(if) baby comes!
  • My hubby is the one staring a home-based business, I'll be helping out.
  • Last September I started my own photography business.  Let me re-phrase that, I bought my camera last September.

I have just been practicing on relatives and friends for free and have only recently been paid.  I want to be able to keep busy, but not defeat the purpose of being home with my child, by working all the time.  Even if I just end up doing it for fun, I really don't care because I have such a passion for it.

  • Oh goodness sakes I would LOVE to do something from home just anything!! I would HATE to have to go back to work and leave my baby somewhere but I dont even know where to begin! Any suggestions??
  • I have been thinking about for a while now, but since I found out about the baby, I dont want to go back to work or put the baby in daycare. My first pregnancy I stayed home for 2 years but I was on disability for a high risk preg. but now my husband is in the military and when he travels there is no one to watch the baby. So I am looking at several companies. I have a back ground in  marketing, administrative and healthcare work, I would like to get into processing medical claims and billing. I dont mind working for a company at home, but if anyone is serious go to cafemom.com they have a group called working from home moms. There is list of websites that you can seriously look into. I have found several jobs that would be great for me. Good luck to all. Starla
  • I recently created business cards for my "cake decorating" business.  But I've been making cakes in addition to my full time teaching job.  I mainly have been doing cakes for family, friends, coworkers, but I plan to distribute my cards to local shops to help make some extra cash. No plans on quitting teaching.  I am our primary income and source of insurance.
  • I will probably be doing an at home day care... I hope.... I love my job but  I don't know if I can leave my baby

  • Michelle, your pictures are GORGEOUS.   You should totally be charging for your services.  You are so talented.  Maybe you can set up even a home studio and specialize on children photography until you have the flexibility to go out and about on location?
  • DH made well over $50,000 in one online business last year (and the business partner made closer to $100,000). We are in the middle of starting a second with another partner.
I am thinking of something similar to DH. I would recommend starting now. It takes time to season your site and work the bugs out. Also, it takes time for search engines to find you. Get something up there as soon as you can!
