Since finding out about my little Poppy, I have started putting a business plan together to start my own home-based business, and I'll hopefully launch it when my Maternity leave ends. I cant stand the thought of leaving my baby in a daycare to return to a job that I already hate.
I'm curious if any of you are looking into making a similar career jump, and if so, what it is? Mine will be an eCommerce store.
Re: Anybody thinking of starting their own home-based Biz?
I started selling Lia Sophia Jewelry a few years back and then lost my momentum when I moved. I'm hoping to get back into that. I have a part scheduled for a couple weeks from now and I'm really hoping it will help launch my business. My friend/manager joined up just a few months before me and she made over $50,000 last year and she basically works part time hours. That, my friend, is my new goal!!
I'll be selling specialty wedding products on a really cute and girly website. It was an idea I had been toying with for the last year because I hated my job so much. I had already hired somebody to design my website (cost was about $2,000), and now I'm in the process of finding my products, adding them to the website, putting my business plan together, etc. I was debating launching before my baby arrives, but if I did that, I wouldn't have maternity leave, which would be pretty dumb on my part.
i already work one day a week as a freelance web and graphic designer (the other 4 days i work for a multimedia company doing the same)... i would LOVE to go completely freelance, especially considering the cost of day care and just not wanting to be away from the baby so much, but it is really hard to start your own biz- especially the first year- most people say that the first year of a new business, you are more likely to lose money then gain... sighhh... we are cash strapped enough as it is... let alone a baby and less income.
i dunno what to do... i would love to though! hopefully! thank god i have 8 months to figure it out!
Last September I started my own photography business. Let me re-phrase that, I bought my camera last September.
I have just been practicing on relatives and friends for free and have only recently been paid. I want to be able to keep busy, but not defeat the purpose of being home with my child, by working all the time. Even if I just end up doing it for fun, I really don't care because I have such a passion for it.

I am thinking of something similar to DH. I would recommend starting now. It takes time to season your site and work the bugs out. Also, it takes time for search engines to find you. Get something up there as soon as you can!
