I pumped after every feeding while my son was in the NICU for 9 days after birth. When we got home, I also pumped after every feeding for about 2 weeks, and then I dropped pumping down to 1 or 2 x per day until DS was 4 weeks old. I haven't really pumped since...and if I did I fed it to him right away anyway. My question is this...
If your breastmilk nutritionally changes to meet the growing needs of your baby, then older pumped breastmilk would not be good for them, right? I mean, how can I feed a 6-month-old breastmilk that's been in the freezer since he was 1-month-old? I'm worried about this and think I should either get rid of the frozen milk or feed it to him now. Any thoughts?
I should mention that I do not have DS in daycare and he won't be in the future. However, DH will begin to feed him a few nights a week (one feeding each night) when I go to work in the evening for a few hours. I was hoping to make a stash so that I could quit BFing sometime after 6 months of age though so this milk that I've stashed up was going to be fed for the most part after 6 months of age.
Re: Stash/Nutrition Question
While breastmilk does change as your dc gets older, it is in no way bad for them to have it later. The biggest change is from the colostrum that you get the first couple days to the regular milk. Either way, it is very beneficial for your baby to get it. PLEASE do not throw out the breastmilk!!
I don't know how long you plan on using stored bm after dc turns 6 months old, but make sure you always use the oldest milk first when you are feeding by bottle. I wouldn't use frozen bm older than 6 months old (and even then, make sure it is kept in the back of a freezer or in a deep freezer).
kellymom.com is a great resource for information on storing and other bf'ing questions.
Thanks for that. I won't ditch the stash then...whew...I was about to get upset if I would have to. I keep my stash in a deep freeze, so I think I'm good on that.
Thanks again for the reply. I feel better now.
