MAC help - won't recognize video files

Ok,my canon camcorder labels the files as .MTS which none of my programs recognize.  I tried re-naming them as .MOV files and I still can't access them.

Can anyone help! I'm going to be super bummed if I can't get the videos on my computer.

    You just need to download a video converter. I googled "free mac video converter" and got a bunch of responses. MPEGstreamClip and iSquint are good ones if you want a rec.?
