How long were you "sick" from work?

I had a csection and the Dr. wrote me out for the normal 8 weeks.  If the doc will write me out longer ( I would like 8 more days for various reasons... brother's wedding, 2 mo dr appt, finish up a grad class......) then I can use some of DH's sick days and get paid (we are both teachers).  If not, then I will have to take days w/o pay (my days are gone) for said wedding and dr. appt and be much more stressed time wise and money wise.  Anybody get more time out from their dr?

Re: How long were you "sick" from work?

  • good luck with that.  the "standard" is 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for csection.  I think you would have to really have something wrong with you for them to say you have to stay out of work longer and get paid for it.

  • I got an additional 2 weeks for PPD so 10 weeks total.
  • I have heard PPD works. I just wasn't ready to go back next week, so I called HR ( I am also a teacher) and they said just to email them the day I am coming back. I took an additional week and a half unpaid.
  • I got a note from my doctor asking that I be able to use all of my accumulated sick days. ?Nothing medical in there and it worked, I can use all 60 days for my 12 weeks off.?
  • Seriously this is part of the reason working moms get such a bad reputation.  You have used all of your paid time.  Just because you had a baby and a c/s does not give  you the right to cheat the system to get paid for time that you are doing personal things.  Stress, financial or other wise when relating to personal days (and yes your brother's wedding, baby's appt and a grad class are personal days) is not a reason to convince your doctor to extend your leave.
  • Just to clarify, I actually did have PPD.

I am not "cheating" the system since they are my husband's days.  If I would not have had the c-section, then I would have started back to work earlier and I would have had "personal" days to use for these occasions, but I had to use all my sick and personal days to cover my 8 weeks due to the unplanned csection.  I think that my husband should be able to transfer his days to me for up to the 12 weeks allowed maternity leave anyways.  Besides I don't know what you have against working moms but we can't afford for one of us to stay at home....

  • My work only provides 4 weeks of paid maternity leave.  However, I extended an additional 4 more weeks using some of my accrued sick leave.  All I needed was a note from my doctor - in this case, I received one from my son's pedi.
