Potty for Boys?

Alec started in the classroom for the 2-year olds today and they are starting potty training. (my little boy is getting so big :()

I need to get a potty and I remember everyone saying that the seat is better than the actual potty?  Is there a brand that you can recommend?

Any other tips for training boys?

Re: Potty for Boys?

  • We bought the first years soft potty seat, but Ethan hates it.  He's scared to sit on the potty so we bought him his own small personal potty which he loves to sit on.  We aren't actively trying to potty train right now, but we do talk to him about it and I let him sit on his potty at night while we are preparing for bath time.  He definitely knows that he's suppose to pee pee there, but he hasn't done it yet.  He always waits until he's in the bath tub.  The suite Ethan is currently in at daycare does not potty train, but when he moves up to the next suite, in August, they begin to actively potty train.  I'm not planning on trying to potty train Ethan until this summer when he's closer to 2 1/2 years old.

  • We have two.

    1) one is a soft seat ring that fit on a regular toilet.  I removed the "shield" and just taught him to make sure it's tucked down when he goes.

    2) We also have a personal potty.  Again removed the shield.

He uses both and has also begun to stand up to pee in the regular toilet.  He saw some of the other boys at school doing it, so he tries it at home sometimes too.  I just let him choose what he wants to use.  I'd say that the majority of the time he uses the personal potty at home, but more because it's a size that is comfortable for him.  If he wants to stand to pee, he is only allowed to use the regular toilet.

  • I don't think the actual potties are bad...we have both and the boys prefer their own personal potties vs. getting on the big toliet. I think most people think its easier to start off on the big toilet for the sake of having to introuduce the big toilet later. hope that makes sense.

as far as tips...I don't really have any...we started introducing the potty about a month ago. Andrew is more interested then Ethan. On the weekends we put them on the potty about every 2-3 hours or when they ask. Andrew would sit on it ALL day if we allowed him too. Andrew will say "potty" and then we know he is ready to use it....he goes almost everytime he uses it. He has even gone poop on it.

My advice is make it fun and just be consistent. Good luck!

  • We went straight to the regular toliet mainly because thats what they did at school.  He's has always peed standing up which is nice to not have to re-train.  We also got him one of the small toliet rings that's attached to a ladder/stool...its made him feel so much more comfortable and is fully trained now...even at night :)

  • Whether it is the big potty or the small potty we have always taught him to pee standing up, either with his hands on the wall for the small potty or on the seat for the big. Just be sure as I am sure you will to wash their hands real good. However sometimes he does pee sitting. You can always just use the small potty as a stool for the big potty.
