When did/does DC become more efficient with BF?

My DS will be 6 weeks tomorrow. ?He was not gaining weight well (7oz in 15 days) at his 1 month visit, so I had to start feeding him more - I am single-side feeding and he was taking ~20 minutes every 2-3 hours during the day, then 3-4 hours overnight. ?So I started getting him to eat for ~30 minutes, at the same intervals (I have always had to wake him up), and he gained 9oz in 7 days, which we were all happy with. ?So I am supposed to be doing the same thing (30 minutes every 2-3 hours) until the next weight check, 2 weeks later. ?Well I am one week in, and DS will not take 30 minutes any more. ?At most I can get him to take 25 or so minutes, but that usually takes a lot of effort, and involves DS spitting up at least once from the effort. ?So could he be more efficient now? ?I don't want to force feed him, but I also want him to gain weight. ?Thanks in advance! (Sorry if I don't get to thank you for replies until later...I am heading out now and won't get back for a few hours - but I am grateful for any advice!)

  • Does he appear to be gaining weight and getting enough milk now?  If he's eating for 25 min., then that is good.  I wouldn't force feed him, especially if he is spitting up during the feeding.  At 6 weeks, I would think he is getting more proficient and you milk production is likely to be more established.
