How much notice did you give?

The date of my last day at work is still under 'discussion' between my hubby and I (he wants me to hold out until right before the baby is born but I'm about ready to quit tomorrow) but I'm just wonder how much notice I should give to my boss. I was thinking mid-April for a June 12th end date (unless the doctor pulls me early). Is that enough time? I don't want to give so much that they pile projects on me and stress me out but I don't want to leave them high and dry either. Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: How much notice did you give?

  • I told my principal at the beginning of the school year that I wasn't coming back. I worked up until the day I delivered DS#1 (in January of 2005), and by then I had my long-term sub in place and lesson plans for the remainder of the school year.

It really depends on your situation. If you're afraid that giving too much notice will work against you, wait until the third trimester to drop the bomb. Of course, make sure to give at least a few weeks...you don't want to burn any bridges.

  • I told them I was gonna be a SAHM when I told them I was pregnant...about half-way through.  I probably gave them 3-4wks notice on my last day..which was about 1.5mo before I was due...I quit early because I was miserably uncomfortable even by then.

This is me. I work in the marketing department and my job involves a lot of heavy lifting of trade show display cases and boxes of product literature and it's taking a toll on me and the baby. Today I carried a 35 pound box and I'm so crampy and sore I could cry. Plus, the stress is just a pain in the butt. I think I'll be out of here sooner than my hubby hopes.

  • My due date was July 31 and my last day of work was June 10. My situation was different from yours though. I had just moved to FL and found out I was pregnant. I was trying to find a job and called this preschool (just got my degree in Education) and they happened to be hiring to replace one of their teachers who was leaving. I went in to the job with them knowing I was pregnant and with the agreement that I was only working to finish out the current school year.

I would say that Mid-April sounds like a nice amount of time for them to be prepared. You might even push it until the end of April/beginning of May. That would give them enough time to hire someone and train them (just about 6 weeks).

GL! I hated my job as well.... but it was worth it in the end b/c we put everything I made at that job into savings... that is all that got me through those LONG 6 months!
