Adjusted Age?

Can someone please explain what adjusted age is and how it works?  I have seen a couple signatures with this information in it, but haven't heard the term otherwise.

Re: Adjusted Age?

  • Adjusted age pertains to preemies (usually more than 4 wks early)

example - my boys were 9 wks early. So they are 8.5 months old on paper...but anatomically they are 6.5 months old aka - adjusted.

doctors use "adjusted" for the first 1-2 yrs of growth for preemies for growth charts/development etc. Preemies are supposed to catch up by 2 yrs, so its not needed after that usually.

    ?

  • Yep, adjusted age counts from the due date.

Like sweater said, it's usually for babies who are more than 3 or 4 weeks early, although in reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, the author says you need to count from the due date when figuring out where your baby falls on the sleep milestones and readiness, even for babies who are only a week or two early (because they are still a week or two behind babies born on or after their due date) so for my 38-weekers I do factor in adjusted age for some things.
