2nd Trimester

Anyone else a Medical Weenie?

Ok, so I know that there will be lots of poking and prodding! But, gees! I have had 5 arm pokes in the last 2 weeks and for some reason, today, I felt so dizzy at the blood draw and literally felt myself beginning to faint! The whole rush and dizziness overwhelmed me! Then the cold sweat, muffled hearing, and finally tunnel vision. I was able to manage to prevent a total knockout, but the lab tech said I turned so pale that she thought I was gonna puke. What the heck, I haven't had issues like this in the past, maybe my nerves are on total edge.

Anyone else have issues regarding all the poking and prodding we get being pregnant?

Re: Anyone else a Medical Weenie?

  • I was that way before I got pregnant. They'd make me lay down anytime they came near me with a needle. Now I just focus on the baby, and it seems to be working.

  • not me. but i just had to open your post, because i could not figure out what it was going to be about with that medical weenie subject line
  • Ewww!  I hate needles with a passion.  I always focus on deep breathing and making conversation with the tech.  I try to remind myself its nothing compared to what labor is going to be like.

  • Often times its referred to as a vaso-vagal response. Kind of a mini-shock your body goes through when the vein is messed with or poked. Its beyond your control, so you're not a weenie :) Sometimes if its unusually painful it can elicit that feeling too. Even as a nurse who draws blood and starts IV every day, I still nearly pass out whenever I get poked- its pathetic :)

  • I pass out every.single.time I get stuck with a needle. Or if I'm watching someone else get stuck. But I've been that way for a long time, not just since pregnancy. Just make sure you tell the nurse and lay down!
  • The thing that terrifies me most about labor is the IV I'll need for my GBS antibiotics.  i hate needles. hate hate hate! I don't care if that make me a wimp. Usually I cause so much drama when the phleb tech has to draw my blood that they give me some kind of cartoon-themed band-aid usually reserved for those 7 and under....
