TTC after 35

Over 40?

.... (Cross-posted from "Pregnant after 35") .....

I'm new here. :)  My hubby & I just recently made the decision to have a baby.  Long story that I won't go into, but finally the time is right.  We are so excited, and we are busy getting our bodies as healthy as we can to conceive.

I'm 41, and he is 29.  I've been doing a lot of reading online & off, and I realize that being over 40 doesn't make having a healthy baby SUPER risky.  It is just more risky than it is for younger women.  Unfortunately, we are both overweight so losing weight is first on the agenda, but that will take time.  We have an appt with my OB/GYN on Friday for my preconception appt so I will be most interested in how long she thinks we may need to wait before throwing the birth control pills out the window.....or if we should wait at all!

High blood pressure & diabetes run in my family so I figure (and worry!) that I'm a sitting duck for preeclamsia & gestational diabetes.  I've been waiting to lose the weight that I gained since the wedding 4 years ago, and it has been incredible to see how motivated I am by the thought of getting healthy in order to have a baby. :)

Just wanted to say "hello" and to see if anyone else out there is over 40 and facing their first pregnancy.  All words of wisdom are welcome!

Re: Over 40?

  • Welcome! I'm not 40 yet. I've got about 1.5 years. I'm 38 and DH is 39. We are TTC #1.  I hope you get a BFP very soon and that you have a healthy pregnancy when you get that BFP.

  • I'll be 40 in July and I sure hope pregnant by then! ?It's been a long 18 months for us, but there have been many success stories of ladies 40+ who have gotten pregnant easily and had healthy pregnancies and babies. ?Welcome to the board and I would toss the pills tout suite!?

  • Hi there,

Welcome to the board. My advice is the same as CharBart  - give those pills a toss!

    Good luck to you!

  • Welcome. I am 39 (will be 40 in may) DH IS 36. I would toss the pills.Good luck and I hope your stay is a short one.
  • Not over 40 but wanted to wish you luck and welcome you to the board. My 39 y/o sister is pg so it can certainly be done and result in a healthy baby. I thin you Gyn will tell you to lose the bcp yesterday if not sooner.
  • Welcome to a great board! We're both 38, and have a little time before 40, but not too much! I would totally ditch the pills as soon as possible! Good luck!

  • I agree - ditch the pills now, and work on getting healthier at the same time that you are trying.  Good luck and welcome to the board!
  • Hi, Sandra.

    I'm not over 40 yet...but close enough. I'll be 40 in November.

As everyone has said, toss the pills! Excercise, eat right, and TTC at the same time.

Other than that, try not to obsess to much. If you're like most of the rest of us, that won't be easy!

  • I'm 39 and will be 40 in a little over 6 months.  It took me 6 months to get AF after going off BCP, so I would get off now, as pps have said.

Good luck and keep us updated!  We love info here!

  • I'll be 41 in 19 days!  Took me 5 months to get AF after going off the pill....  Def get off now, I wish I had gotten off sooner!

    Good Luck!

  • Welcome!!  I turn 40 in August, DH turns 44 in July.  We are TTC #1.
  • Oh, my goodness!!!  You ladies are so welcoming!!!  Thanks so much for all your posts.

Thanks to your words of wisdom about pitching my BCPs which were echoed by several of my best friends, I decided not to get a refill last Wednesday.  I figured that since my pre-con appt was scheduled for Friday, I could check with my doctor within time.  Well, of course, she said the same thing so GOODBYE PILLS!  :):):):)

The pre-con appt went as expected.  She pretty much brought up & we discussed everything that I thought she would that I'd read about lately.  While talking w/the nurse, I *wasn't* prepared to lose it when I heard the sound of a baby's heartbeat in a nearby room.  :):):):)  And she thought at first that I was crying about my insurance!  LOL.  My hubby offered to go to the appt with me so he got his first taste of how much time we ladies can spend in doctor's offices!!!  We were there for at least an hour before we saw the doc!

I swallowed my first prenatal vitamins (GestiCareDHA) on the way to work after the appt and started crying again.  It's been three weeks today since we made our decision, and life is so magical and I'm so happy just to be TTC. :):)

Regarding my insurance:  when we got to the appt, I learned that my doctor is out of network (OON) for my new insurance.  :(  I just got on my husband's insurance since I got laid off in November, and I'm working a 2 mos temp assignment right now.  (I'm thankful to have a wonderful husband & to have his insurance to be on, especially during these difficult economic times.  So many folks are suffering.)  His open enrollment is in May so, hopefully, we're going to upgrade his plan to one with better coverage for OON.  However, we need to look at the figures because OON can get super expensive really fast so it just depends.

    Blah blah blah..... :P

Anyway, thanks again, ladies, for being so awesome.  I'm happy to be here.
