Now I am freaking out. The GTT test made me really sick (didn't happen last time), but I thought it was due to the lemonlime (versus orange) drink that they made me drink (I hate everything lemon lime). My Dr said no news is good news. Today I get a message from them to call them back for test results. Of course, the office is now closed so I have to wait until morning.
I didn't have any GD issues with my last pregnancy. I also thought excessive weight gain/baby growth was a sign of GD and I'm just now starting to gain weight at all and baby is mesasuring right to due date (based on LMP and O date and u/s).
I couldn't make it for 3-4 months on a GD diet. I don't eat vegetables AT ALL (they physically make me ill) so I couldn't survive on that diet alone. I need my fruits to make up for it! GRRRR! I hate waiting!
Anyone else have experience with this? How restricted were you?
Re: Failing GTT test...
I agree, not everyone passes the 1st test (1hr). A friend dind't pass it and had to do the 3hr test and she passed it. Try asking your doctor or lab to see if you need to be fasting for the test, some places don't need you to and it helps if you eat something before the test.
Good luck!
I failed the one hour with flying colors at 6w1d, and have to live the whole pregnancy on the GD diet. My doctor skipped the 3 hour because I failed the 1 hour so bad.
In answer to what you mentioned in the OP, excessive weight gain is a sign of GD, but it is not the only sign. I am 12wks now, and havent gained or lost any weight but I have GD. GD is when the pregnancy hormone blocks your body's natural means of controling insulin released in your body. So it is nothing you could/can really prevent.
The diet is not that bad, and you can easily do it without ever touching a vegetable. You just have to cut back your carb intake (175g per day) and eat more frequently and make sure that there is protein with each meal (i.e. cheese, avocado, meat, egg, etc...) The only sucky part is no sugar
Good luck to you!
I remember being freaked out when I failed my 3-hour test, too. IS that that one you failed? If not, don't assume you have GD yet. Also, you are pretty misinformed about the cause of GD as well as the diet. You need to calm down, possibly read up on it further and talk to your doctor.
I had it with my second pregnancy, and expect to have it with this one. It's NOT THAT BAD. Yes, you have to follow a stricter diet, but you can, and are incouraged to eat fruit, still, so you don't need to worry about that. The diet is about eating smaller, more balanced carb-to-protein mini meals throughout the day. Typically, you eat three meals and three snacks. Snacks, and breakfast are limited to 15-30 grams of carbs per meal, lunch is usually 30-45 grams of carbs and dinner is typically 45-60 grams of carbs. You make sure you are eating that many carbs for the specific meal or snack, and fill out the meal with protein and fruits/veggies.
The hardest part is having to take your blood-sugar all the time(hard to remember when you're busy, and the finger pricks smart) and cutting out sugar, sweets and juice in the first couple of weeks. Once you've eliminated refined sugar from your diet for a week or two, you won't even crave it and the diet gets easier and easier to follow. I never felt deprived. There are TONS of delicious, sugar-free desserts that you can enjoy when you want something special. I got to eat cheese with reckless abandon. It was actually pretty great! The best part is that you will lose a few pounds in those first few weeks, and then your weight gain will really slow down for the rest of the pregnancy.
I have it and I was SOOOOO upset when I got the news that I failed. I too thought I would not be able to eat bread, pasta, or any sugar. It is really not bad. I eat EVERYTHING I did before, with the exception of DQ Blizzards and Starbucks. Tonight I had a chocolate chip cookie with dinner. Yesterday I had a Reese's peanut butter egg. I still eat Cocoa pebbles cereal. The only things I've changed are adding in 3 small snacks (an apple w/ peanut butter, or cheese and crackers, or granola bars, banana, etc.). I eat my cereal at night instead of in the morning. I don't drink juice, but I rarely did before. I switched from regular Coke to Diet Coke (I normally stay away from aspartine drinks), and I read labels and switched to lower carb foods (like my yogurt, tortillas, whole grain pasta, etc.). Really small changes. I have been on the 'diet' for a month and I think I'm just borderline. I went out to eat the ?other night and had pasta and shared the most decadent chocolate cake.... and I still was 30 under my target number. So, you never know how severe you might have it, or what foods you'll be able to handle.
That being said, don't freak out until you know you have failed the 3-hour. Lots of people fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. I did on my first pregnancy.
Oh, and at the time I was diagnosed (28 weeks), I had only gained 11 pounds and my baby was measuring small. ?
Good luck!?
