It is untrue that you do not share nutrients with the fetus before six weeks. What is usually said on here is "you don't share blood with the fetus until six weeks" which is incorrect in a few ways. First off, you never actualy share blood with the fetus, but as soon as implantation occurs you do share a capillary bed and nutrients do cross over to the fetus. As soon as the blastocyst begis to develope further the fetus needs oxygen and nutrients. This is why it is important to take a folic acid supplement BEFORE you get pregnant, because as soon as implantation occurs the baby begins taking folic acid from the mother, and the neural tube is the first thing to form (long before the magic 6 week mark). It is possible for babies to be harmed by drugs, alcohol, and medications taken before the mother finds out she is pregnant because these things have already made it to the fetus, but it is unlikely. There is no reason to abstain entirely from things like alcohol when TTC, but after a possible implantation it is recommended that mothers cut down their intake a lot.
I'm a nurisng student covering maternal newborn nursing and we learned this last week, i have since discussed it with my NP professor and my CNM instructor as well. This information is the latest evidence based practice. I can cite sources if you would like me to, because i know a lot of you aren't going to belive it.
Re: i'm gonna get flamed for this, but newbies need correct info
It's nice to read something so informative and well-written. Thanks for sharing.

This. In many cultures, they drink occaisionally throughout pregnancy - because their version of "drinking" (a glass of wine with dinner) is so different from the american version (getting plowed 4x a week). I think this conversation GREATLY depends on how you drink, and if you are drinking multiple drinks on more nights than you are not, you should probably address that before TTC anyway.
I am so glad that you clarified this. It bugs me when people say "you share blood with the baby" because as you said, you never actually do. I never how to reword it though (as you said you share nutrients).

I didn't want to risk actually being KTFU and not giving the LO all that s/he needed from me. Good thing...turns out I was!
