Maternity pants

I've been having a really hard time finding cute maternity pants (especially jeans).  Has anyone ever taken pants that they already have to a tailor to have them turn them into maternity pants?

Re: Maternity pants

  • I just bought two pairs from Motherhood Maternity, and some capri's from Old Navy... I wouldn't want to cut up my old jeans, because I plan to use them again afterwards.

  • I bought 2 pairs of maternity jeans from Old Navy this weekend and I love them. One has a full panel and has a low-rise panel. The low rise seems more comfy but I love them both. My mom found some maternity panels at a fabric store so I gave her a couple of pairs of work pants to cut up and convert. Let's see how it goes...
  • I mutilated my fav. pre prganancy jeans just last weekend and they are FANTASTIC!  I did it myself, but a good tailor (especially a woman) could probably do it for you.  If you sew or know someone who does it's really easy to do yourself.

I didn't like the maternity panels that you buy at the fabric store, so I found instructions online to follow.  Basically it involved cutting off the waistband in the back and down to about even with my pubic bone in front and then sewing on a sleeve of knit fabric and elastic so that they ended up having the full panel.  I'm doing my fav. bermuda shorts this week.

I know that I can replace these easier than I could find cute, plus size, long jeans, so it was totally worth it and they came out great.

  • Why didn't you like the maternity panels at the fabric store?  (I had no idea there was such a thing)
  • OLD NAVY! OLD NAVY! OLD NAVY! I found the best mat. jeans there, and right now they're on sale for $25 (was $32.50). I wouldn't cut up my old pants unless I didn't plan on wearing them anymore after the baby....
  • I've had really good luck with ON for jeans and really bad luck with Motherhood for jeans.  But, the key for me was to try on multiple styles and sizes at ON.

Like a pp said, I don't want to sacrifice the old jeans that I love because I want to get back into them later!
