Baby Names

Leo

I really like the name Leo, but I don't like any of its longer versions (Leonardo, Leonard, Leon). Have you ever seen this name used on its own?

Re: Leo

  • I agree with you; I really like Leo, but I'm not so wild about the proper names. What about Leroy?
  • I think Leo is a great name that works perfectly fine on it's own. It was on our list, but unfortunately with our last name, we couldn't use it.

  • I LOOVE this name. It was my #1 boy name.

And don't worry about the long version. I've seen it used on its own plenty of times, and if you're going to call him Leo, might as well just name him Leo.

  • Leo is a perfectly valid given name.  Just as an example/"proof", there have been 13 Popes who took the name Leo.

I'm generally very, very down on names that aren't "full" names.  What's more, we have Leopold on our list (and will probably call him Leo most of the time).  I still wouldn't think twice about Leo not being "complete."
  • I like Leo much more than the longer versions. I've never seen it on its own, but people will call your baby whatever you call him. You could start a trend.

Leo seems like a nn to me. I think it's a nice name though.?
  • I'm partial to the name b/c that's what we're using, however his proper name is going to be Leonidas.  Leonidas is a Greek name and since dh is Greek it works with the whole 'family' aspect, but we'll just call him Leo.

  • Leopold is my favorite long version.

    I love Leo!

  • This is my end all be all favorite boy name ever and wouldn't you know it MH hates it. He has been nice enough to concede to it being a middle name though so I guess I will have to settle for that! I know a couple of Leo's who are just Leo and aren't going by a nn for something like Leonard or Leopold. I do actually like Leopold but much prefer just simple Leo.
  • I like Leo just on it's own...not as a nn for a longer version.
