2nd Trimester

Dizzy!

I woke up randomly dizzy this morning, not m/s, just dizziness. My book says it's probably from low blood pressure, most likely from sleeping on my back.

Now I'm kinda worried! I always go to sleep on my side, and usually wake up on my back. I don't know how to stop, I tried a body pillow and it doesn't work!

The book also implies that the dizziness should go away within a short period of time, but it's been two hours and I'm still dizzy.

Anybody have experience with this? ty!

Re: Dizzy!

  • Hi -

I've had some brief bouts of dizziness too, mostly when I change position suddenly in bed. I would call your doctor for peace of mind since your dizziness has lasted so long, although I am sure it hasn't harmed your baby. Still, there may be something the doctor can recommend or monitor for if it continues.

I've read that a lack of iron in your diet can cause anemia which can cause dizziness. Are you taking the prenatal vitamins and eating food rich in iron (red meat and pork if you're a meat-eater)?

     Good luck.

  • I forgot to add - I also read that around the 4th month you shouldn't spend much time on your back because the weight of the baby compresses a major artery and may decrease blood flow to the uterus. While I wouldn't worry if you wake up on your back (just change again to your side), I would try to figure out a solution for staying on your side. Do you have the body pillow wrapped around you (through your legs) so it's acting like a bumper on your back, keeping you from rolling over?

Yep, I take prenatals and I am definitely a meat-eater. ;) Thanks for responding. I have an appointment this week, I will make sure to talk to the Dr. about it. I will call today if it doesn't get better very soon!

  • I talked to my dr about this and headaches on friday.  she said that it was happening because of a drop in bp (like your book said) and to try having a little caff each day.  I have had one caff soda since she said that and haven't had a single problem since :)  Talk to your dr, I'm sure they will give you some good advice on what might help.
