Baby Names

WDYT of Rory?

for a boy.

Is it becoming too feminine? Not many people know of Gilmore Girls over here, so I am not too worried about that association. Can it be a nn for something?

Re: WDYT of Rory?

  • I have a friend whose 14 month old son is Rory, born in the UK, and they are about to move to Melbourne! It is not a girly name IMO, I love it!

  • I am aware that it is primarily a boys' name even though GG sort of brought it over to the girls' side, but I just don't like it. It's just not masculine sounding enough for my taste. Other Irish names ending in Y that I think are better are Brady, Dempsey or Donnelly.

  • I like the name, but I may be a bit biased because my brother's name is Rory and I also have an uncle Rory.   In the US people may think of it as a girl's name because of GG and in the New England area because of Rory Kennedy, but to me it's a boys name.   It's actually a name we are considering if we have a boy, but I want to run it by my brother first in case he was thinking of the possibility of having a jr someday.
  • My Dh is Robert Ryan and MIL wanted to nn him Rory. They ended up with a nn for Robert though (after FIL) though I actually like Rory more...

  • The only Rory I know IRL is a guy in his 20s. I think it's a unisex name that is completely acceptable for both genders.

I love this! Rory is a fantastic nn for Robert Ryan. It could also be Roman Ryan, Rowan Ryder, you name it.

  • I've only heard the name for a girl, it was a nn for Aurora. But she's the only Rory I've every known.

  • Ohhh... I was thinking girl! But, yes, because of GG. No clue on full names. Guess I can't get it in my head as a boy name because I never heard of it before the show.
  • I'm a big Gilmore Girls fan, but I still think it sounds more like a boy name and I like it.

  • I think it is a boys' name, but to me it is the hardest name to say. The two R's get stuck somewhere when I try to pronounce it. Am I the only one?

It's ok, but I think of it as a girls name. I went to high school with a girl named Rory and that was her first name (not a nn).?
  • I know adults named Rory.....2 are female and 1 is male. All have Irish last names.

I love the name for a girl or a boy and we are leaning towards it ourselves~

  • Well, I like it. We named DS builder bear lamb Rory K. Lamb because DS loved the roar sound so we used that recording.

I agree with you completely.  Rory is a very difficult name for me to say.  It's hard to imagine the trouble other children would have saying it.

  • We are naming our DD Rorie. I love the name and it's not as popular as a lot of other names out there right now. Children may have a hard time with it but you're an adult a lot longer than you are a child..... Also, I have a 4 year old nephew that says it perfectly.
  • My older cousin who is a boy is named Rory.

  • It's a little bit of a tongue twister to say. It always comes out sounding garbled.
