Funny grandmother reaction to preg. news (longish)

My grandmother is 97 and until two years ago was completely coherent. During our annual visit with family two years ago, DH and I took her out for dinner. DH held the door for her, held her arm walking etc.  When my mom spoke with my grandmother the next day she said she was sorry that I liked DH because he took her out for a dinner date and they had a wonderful time!

Fast forward to Christmas '08 when DH, my dad, and I visited her. My ecstatic dad tells her the news that I am pregnant. Her exact words were "Well I don't think THAT is a good idea!"

I said, "Well grandmother, I know why I think it is a bad idea, why do you?"  She then asks who the father is and I point to DH sitting across from her.  She gets upset and asks if we are going to get married. DH explains that we are married.  Turns out, my grandmother had completely forgotten our wedding 10 years earlier.

Now, every time my parents visit her they show her photos of my wedding (and her at it) to convince her I am a "good girl" and didn't steal DH away from her.  The sad part is that she is obviously deteriorating mentally but at 97 she has had a full life.

I never thought my grandmother and I would be competing over the same guy!!

  • Although it is sad to see her like that, it was a funny comment! I think it is cute that she thought your DH was taking her out on a date! :)

  • awww I love old people! Too funny (but yet a bit sad)! You better watch her around your DH.
  • I will admit that this is a sweet sad story.  My DH's grandfather has no clue who he is as well as anyone else.  When we told him that he was going to be  great-grandfather it took him a while and a lot of explaining to tell him how that was possible.

  • that is a sweet story, i have worked with the elderly and sometimes you get some pretty good stories from them.  I am happy that you took it with stride, and still keep her invovled.
  • What an adorable story :) I'm glad she's had a full life, I hope I can still be coherent at 95.

  • LOL.  That is freaking hilarious.  Sounds like something my grandma would do.  She is only 86, but she hasn't had a good memory in years, she asked me again yesterday if I was married and when I got married and why she never met my DH.  She has several times, in fact we live across the street from her!!!  LOL.
  • That is so funny!!!

  • Awe, that is sweet but a bit disturbing.  I work with a lot of dementia patients and its almost easier to go along with them, but I can understand how that would affect you (Grandma thinking you are a "bad girl" for stealing her husband!) When DH and I told my grandma, she immeadiatly asked me if I was planning in nursing, and when I said yes, she told me that my nipples were meant for my DH, not the baby!!!
