SF - Explain how BF is a "fad"?

imageSFAug07:
I won't do it. I feel very uncomfortable about it (and also about pumping) and I think it is really a fad that comes and goes. I was not breastfed, my sister wasn't, my DH wasn't, and we were all perfectly healthy children. It was just not common to breastfeed then. It's a personal choice.

  • Guess I didn't read far enough into that thread to catch this gem.

A fad? I've heard a lot of BF/FF arguments, but that one's a first for me... A fad as in 'all the cool kids are doing it'??

  • Wow.

That's definitely one of the more uneducated remarks about BF'ing I've heard on here.  I won't personally be BF'ing, but that's just a moronic statement to make.

    bwahaha!!! Perfect. ?

  • Yeah, it may have been less common when many of us were young, but that doesn't make it a fad. As DH just said, "your boobs are there regardless of trends." Hehe.

Is it because you don't own skinny jeans and long necklaces?

  •   I suppose the argument could be made that at one time formula feeding was a fad but I don't see how something as natural as breastfeeding could ever been considered a fad.

I don't see how an important, personal and usually private decision can be a fad. In response to her, "my parents didn't, DH's parents didn't" comment I would say that back then the women weren't getting the proper educational information on breastfeeding and all its benefits as they are now. It's a lot easier to get this information through the internet and our parents never had that resource. To call breastfeeding a fad is ridiculous.

    You're right, that's TOTALLY a fad.

  • I didn't see the original thread, but I wonder if she means the % of women who BF kind of goes in cycles.  For example, a lot of our grandmothers chose to do it, but our parents chose not to.  Now our generation is chosing (as a whole group) to do it more than our parents generation.  There were a lot of "other" factors in the equation (i.e. the great depression, women's lib movement, formula, etc).  I know when I was a kid, there was often the misconception that only poor people BF'd b/c if you were rich, you could afford formula.  Now, the trend is the opposite - a higher % of educated women BF then less educated women.  I'm not saying any of these sterotypes are right, but maybe this is what she intended by her FAD comment.

Unless she really ment some people BF b/c "All the cool kids are doing it....."Wink

  • it is the "in" thing to do right now. When our moms were having kids (at least back when i was a baby 36 yrs ago) formula was the way to go- and moms who BF were looked down on.

while i don't see this as something that will go away since medical science has learned a lot in the past 30+ yrs - it was NOT popular to BF not too long ago.

I think that it means that it's time to go to the vet and have her spayed.
