3rd Trimester

I thought my water broke

Around 10am I thought my water broke.  I stood up and there was an uncontrollable flow wetting my pants.  I tried to stop it, like when you pee, and it wouldn't.  I felt no contractions.  My husband and I went to the hospital and my doctor said to go home cause I am not dilated and my bag has not broke.  So what was it?  And, it is still "leaking" a bit.  She had no def. answer.

I've had minor discharge for more than a month and I know that is normal, but this was a lot and it was clear and did not have an odor or anything like that.

Has this happened to anyone else?

  • She was not worried at all.  If it continues a lot tomorrow, I am going to go back to see her.  Plus there is no weird movement or contraction like anything going on.  The rest of me feels normal as a prego can.

  • Yup, at 39w1d. ?2 hours before my appt... I was told it was discharge... talk about A LOT of discharge! ?
  • That is weird!!! My sister had pretty much the same thing happen so she went to L&D and they told her that her water hadn't broken. A couple days later she went back in because she was having contractions... well her water had broken when she thought it had and she ended up with an infection in her uterus!!!! Hope everything's ok :)

This may be a stupid question (this is my first baby & am still learning all the "ins & outs of pg) but how do they tell if you're water has broken? & how did they not realize your sister's water did break?

  • The doc measured the amount of fluid in the placenta and the pockets around the baby on an ultra sound and said they were still full and that the sack was still full.  That is how she new it had not broke.

  • Did they actually "test" the liquid?  I've heard of someone having a bag within a bag of water and the outside bag broke, but the inside one that housed the baby, etc. was still intact.  Also, could baby's head be blocking the rest of the water from leaking?  Not to worry you, but just to be on the safe side!!
  • Did it stop or continue? It is a lot, and it feels like slow running water.

  • There is a test they can do to see if there is amniotic fluid if it is not obvious that your water has broken.  When my water broke I first thought I had peed on myself, but after getting off the toilet the water just kept coming.  If I talked, laughed, walked, bent over, or any thing I would have a gush of water come out.  I had to walk with a towel between by legs while I got ready and I wore the towel like a diaper to the hospital because it just kept coming out.  It is truly amazing how much water there is and your body keeps making it so it never stops.

    Good luck to you all

  • They did the test and it was not amniotic fluid.

The following posts explain how they test for that... and as far as the Dr. not figuring out that her water had broken I have no idea??? She received A LOT of baskets and gift certificates from the L&D dept... I suppose they felt horrible!!!
