My mother-in-law wants me to hold off on giving my little her her shots. She believes that early vacinations lead to some childern having Autisim. Our Pediatrician told me that these assumptions were proven to be false after testing and that there is no need to hold off. MIL seems to be pretty stern on the subject, mentioning that both her sons had their shots delayed by a few months and that all babies should do the same. I feel so conflicted!! Any advice?
Re: Holding back shots...
My advice is that you very quickly grow a THICK skin because you are about to get some condescending bordering on nasty replies to this post (although you might escape relatively unscathed as it's a Friday night.)
Then - this weekend - I want you to go to Border's or Barnes and Noble and buy "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Sears. And then read it. I found it very informative and helpful.
"When it comes to sleeping, whatever your baby does is normal. If one thing has damaged parents enjoyment of their babies, it's rigid expectations about how and when the baby should sleep." ~ James McKenna, Ph.D., Mother Baby Behavioral Sleep Center, University of Notre Dame
everyone has, and is entitled to, their own opinion on the subject. i am going by the vaccination schedule my pedi recommends. i also heard that the supreme court ruled that vaccines don't cause autism....
Everyone has a different opinion on this. Even doctors vary. Your best bet is to do your own research and draw your own conclusions.
I chose to delay all shots until 2 months. Then, we only do one shot per visit. We also skipped the Chicken Pox, Rotovirus and Flu shots.
Start by googling. You want to make a decision in this department that you feel confident with because you are educated and knowlegable. It isn't your MILs baby or your pedi's baby. And BTW, I am not sure what delaying them "by a few months" will really do for you. There is a LOT of info out there...not so simple to sort through. Start reading! GL!

Obviously this is biased.
You can read the AAP, CDC, or WHO websites for the other side of the argument.
It is hard to figure out what is the right choice. ARG, this is my biggest conflict so far as a parent.
AND...my last reply on this topic, promise...
The MMR/autism concern isn't the only issue. Many people still think the that the themersol (mercury) is the only thing people are questioning and argue that they have taken it out if the MMR vac, which I believe is true. But there are also concerns regarding the other preservatives and elements used to make the various vaccines effective - and other issues besides autism.
