Baby Names

First and middle names together

How does everyone feel about names that include the middle name. For instance (these are NOT the names we're considering, but examples!) Molly sue, Sally Ray, Christina Jo, Norma Jean (my mom's name). So whenever someone said their name they would say the first and middle name. Any opinions? Do you think people saying the middle name along with the first will stick? DH and I LOVE a few names included with middle... Anyone out there that has a two part name?

Re: First and middle names together

  • Sometimes I really like it - my family was actually just talking about the practice yesterday.  The only experience I have with it IRL is a friend's son, named John Henry.  I never once heard him called John - it was always John Henry.  I thought it was a great name.

  • I'm Toni Grace and my sister is Tana Jo.  A few people in our family have always called us by both names.  When my sister got married, she went as far as to officially add the Jo to her first name and kept our maiden name as her middle (I didn't - I kept my middle and dropped the maiden).

Growing up, the only time I heard Kristi Kay was when I was in trouble.  Now, however, it's what both of my nephews (and as a result the rest of the family) call me.  It started when one of my nephews was about 14 months old...he heard my dad use my full name once, and that was it...from that point on, I was Kristi Kay...

  • It sounds like a lot of it has to do with how we refer to them? If we always call them by both names, maybe everyone will? Thanks for the feedback!

  • If you use it, I'm sure others will catch on.

  • My full name is Rebecca Louise, but my mom would call me jokingly Becky-Lou growing up.

We're born and raised in Oregon but moved to NC a few years ago b/c DH is military.  Even without knowing my middle name, people from the south would just randomly call me Becky-Lou, Becky-Sue, ect.

I say if you like a name, go for it  :)

  • I think it will stick if that's what you and your DH call the child, unless the child decides to shorten it in the future.
    Blank!
  • I have cousins named Hattie Jo, Tessie Mae, and Lizzie Kate.  That's all they go by, because it's all they've ever been introduced as.  Granted, they're young still, so they may choose to shorten it when they're older.  But like others have said, if you call your baby by both names, most likely everyone else will catch on.

I actually like using both names together.?Anne Marie is my favorite example.
  • Could be very cute, as long as they fit. DH has a small cousin named Gracie Mae, which I love.?

  • I come from a bit of a "country" area, so it's pretty common here.  But not just for "country" names.  Obviously there's those names, I had a Mary Jo in a class and my mom's best friend was Jo Anne.  But I babysat for a Renee Paris and Ava Grace and they were known by both names.  I think it can be really nice, especially given all the time people put into finding first and middle names.  I'm strongly considering a two part name as a first name:  Annabelle.

  • I think if you have two names that you love and that sound good together, then it's great!  My mom's name is Mary Ann (which I love)... those are her first and middle names and she has always gone by both.  I also like how "Mary Ann" looks as opposed to combining it like "Marianne", so sometimes using two names is the best way to get the name you want!

  • I think it really depends on where you live.  I know this sounds crazy but where I live only country people do this.  I'm not opposed to it by any means but it is usually the kids that go to the country schools and not the school in town that have first and middle together.
  • My parents gave me a two-part name and the 2nd part never stuck. No one ever used it.
