  • Just to throw it out there, I don't personally know what's best but my brother in law has coached swimming for almost 20 years and was an elite swimmer in college told us that you should never try to teach swimming until the age 4...he said that you can play in the water but not try to teach them to be independent in the water...one reason is because there is a thing called delayed drowning with infants and if any water gets in there it can some how choke them later and in general you don't want your child or you to be too confident a an early age around the pool, he said there are more drowning cases with kids that have "learned" to swim before age 4..anyway just wanted to pass it on, I trust him because I know how good he is and how much he knows about swimming but that's just me...
  • I see where you are coming from Janie about being to confident...but no matter how you look at it- a child under 4 should never be left unattended anyways..so having the expeierence of swimming lesson could also save them when an "accident" does happen. A child will be curious of a pool whether or not they can or cannot swim.

As far as the delayed drowning...sounds scary.

I think swimming lessons would be a fun bonding time! My in-laws have a pool right up the St. from us...so i am not sure if i should join a class or just bond in there pool for free?

  • I also seem where your coming from. Those were some of my fears too. But after watching the ISR YouTube clip, I wanted my son to learn. I know there are risks and I thank you for the advice.
