DS still hungry after some feedings

I have been EBF DS and DH gives the occasional bottle of pumped milk if I need to catch a nap or something.  Most feedings DS is satisfied but usually his mid morning and early evening feedings he is screaming and still hungry - so I have been offering a bottle after many more attempts at getting him lactched back on.  He won't and just screams.  I started to try and pump more to increase supply.  What else can I do?  This is so frustrating for us both.  He is big for his age, 13 lbs at 8 weeks.

Re: DS still hungry after some feedings

  • It may be something other than hunger.  It may be gas, or tiredness, or possibly too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk (are his diapers green?).  You often think that it is a supply issue when it's not.  Kellymom.com has a page about supply and if it is really low - and what to do if it really is.  (I don't know how to do linkies).

  • Are you sure he's hungry?  Just because he eats from a bottle does not mean he is hungry.  He is probably refusing the breast because he is full.  The milk from a bottle automatically flows into their mouth (without even sucking) so they tend to drink it even if they aren't hungry.

The worst thing you can do for your supply is continue to give bottles to fill up DS and cause him to nurse less.
