38 weeks and closed for bizness

So, I had my first cervix check and the doc says I'm still completely closed.  Does this really mean anything?  Could I still go into labor soon?  I guess I don't understand how I could still go into labor with a hard, closed cervix.  I haven't even lost my MP.  Any thoughts?

SIL was closed on a Friday and had my nephew the following Monday.

But you have 2 weeks to go. You can hang on!!! It's a struggle, I know, but I'm sure you'll come around by then.

It doesn't really mean anything. You could still be pregnant for a while, you could go into labor tomorrow, could be somewhere in between. This is why I'm declining cervical checks. I don't even want to know!

You could still have the baby any time.  All of the thinning and effacing could happen very quickly, between appointments, and you could go into labor.  *I* am also in your boat with nothing going on down there.  But that could change at any time without me realizing it.  I think the docs like to check that earlier on to make sure you aren't having the baby too soon.  I don't know why they bother checking at 38-41 weeks though, since it seems to have no real bearing on the health of mom or baby.
