Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Any ideas of what this is??? I'm just clueless....

DS has hardly ever STTN--still isn't--but the last few nights about 45 minutes after putting him down for the night (or until his need to feed) he wakes up in hysterics crying.  I mean like he's so upset--but last night after a minute or so he got himself back to sleep.  But then about every 1-2 hrs during the night he lets out some cries but then he goes back to sleep a minute later (before I can even reach his room).  And then he wakes up between 4:30-5:30 to eat and he eats a lot...but is also very antsy--squirmy--and gassy then.  And usually he'll go back to sleep for a little while after this feeding and after I can calm him down.

**He just finished his 10 days of antibiotics on Sunday for his first ear infection.  I also believe he's starting to get yet another cold (which just came about this morning upon waking).   He's still EBF and eating 2 meals a day.

I'm not sure if he's having gas issues again (he was a super colicky baby)--or if it's a teething thing (his bottom 2 are through, but maybe he's starting elsewhere).  Or if his ear infection never went away maybe (he grabs his ears all the time for comfort--so it's hard to know for sure).  No fever or anything.

I'm just lost--I hate hearing him so upset all night-----he needs his sleep since he doesn't nap at all during the day at daycare.  I hate running to the doctor for everything if it's just growing pains or something  (plus it's a 45 min drive each way--ugh)--but I definitely don't want to ignore a more serious issue.

Any of this sound familiar to you?  What did it end up being?

  • DS's biggest clue when he was getting an ear infection was he was eating less formula. So if that's not the case, I'd say either teething, or maybe his tummy was affected by the antibiotics. You could try some probiotics to help get it back to normal, or even just some yogurt.

Hope he's back to normal soon!

Thanks!  Yeah---we actually tried yogurt while he was on antibiotics and he had a horrible reaction.  I may try again this weekend--we'll see how brave I am LOL.  I've been taking them so they are getting in to the BM.  He seemed so much better right after we stopped the antibiotics---so this is almost a relapse.  Argh......I hate the wondering.

  • Hmm It's hard to say?  From my sleep books I've read, there are babies who have more than just issues STTN.  What is his routine at bed time? I'm sorry, that must be frustrating.
  • Oh, and the letting out a cry thing is normal.  He could be having a dream, or its just his normal wakings (we all have them, but we just don't realize it).  DS does this a lot.  Thats why we wait a few minutes before we go to him because sometimes it's just his brief wakings, or a nightmare.
  • Does your LO go down in the crib asleep or awake?  In "The Baby Whisperer Solves all yoru Problems" she mentions something about if they go down asleep they often wake in 20-40 minutes and cry because of the separation from you, which might explain the other waking.  Did anything change in regard to going down asleep vs. awake?
  • Good point on going to bed awake---he typically does not b/c he falls asleep while nursing and is "out"......but a couple nights we did put him in awake and he did well putting himself to sleep --but I don't recall the rest of the night.  Hmmmm....might need to give that a shot.

I'm just more concerned that it's an ear infection or something.  Maybe I'll try some new sleep techniques this weekend and then Monday see how it is and take him in if necessary.
