Morning poll: How many of you have your dream job?

I certainly don't.

I've always wanted to be a professional party planner or a small business owner (resturant/bakery/coffee house). As much as I would love to do it, in the back of my mind it scares me because I know it's not "practical". And with the fact that FI and I will move every 2-ish years, it would be completely moronic to open a business, just to have to move again.

I'm going to school for paralegalism, I loved my law firm job and it's a safe choice. Oh so pratical.

I've often thought about doing the party planning privately until we get settled somewhere one day, eventually.

Re: Morning poll: How many of you have your dream job?

  • Hell no.  Not loving my job these days.  Actually, my dream job now would be a SAHM.  Still don't know if that will be a possibility.
  • Loading the player...
  • not even close.  I want to write novels and being a military cop is about as far from that as you can get!

I'm probably going to finish my degree in dental hygiene, though, because I'm so close.

  • I don't know what my dream job is. It changes practically every day
  • I love being a SAHM, wouldn't trade it for anything...BUT I'm going to school for Elementary Ed that was one day when the kids are older and I'm bored I can go back to work.  Not to mention, if anything ever happened between me and DH I need to have a backup and be able to take care of myself.  I hate to think that way, but you almost have to these days.
  • I'm still in school and not excited about finishing.

I really want to have my own bakery too...but worry about the financial risk....

  • Nope. If by dream you mean they are fun people and flexible, then yes. But I've always wanted to do journalismn of some sort. You can still do the party planning thing as your retirement job. When the kids are grown and out the house.
  • I have my dream job in billing. I think a huge part of that is that I have a beyond amazing boss, and I work from home so I get to be around my children.

If I weren't in this, I would like to be in some kind of party planning business -- wedding, shower, etc.

Ironically, I am going to school for Nursing and Radiological Technologies.

  • Well currently I'm laid off, but I did have a really great job. I work in advertising. It's fun and the firm I was working for was fun as well. (Got laid off cause they aren't doing well financially).

But if I had a dream job it would be to coach field hockey full time so that I could be home with my kids during the day and coach in the afternoon/evenings. I'm hoping to do that now that I have the opportunity to.

  • I did what I thought was my dream for 10 years and felt very ready for a change before we moved.  Right now I'm not working, waiting to get my green card, so I'm having fun as a SAHM.

What about getting a job as an event planner for a big hotel?  That's what my sister does at a Fairmont hotel and she loves it.  She also gets crazy ass discounts on some of the nicest hotels around the world!

  • I ALMOST do.  I am a pharmceutical sales rep- and i truly love it... but i'm trying to get a part time/job share position within my co- doing the same thing i do now- but only part time- if I get it then i WILL have my dream job.
  • My dream job would be someone paying me (MY SALARY + BENEFITS) for just being me...and not having to do anything!! :)

  • I used to teach...that was my dream job in HS. Then after 2 years of that, I started going to night school to do hair. So I did that for a while on the side for cash. I saved up for almost 2 years, and now I have my dream job...SAHM.

I don't know what I'll do when my kids are in school, but I guess I'm lucky to have something to fall back on.

  • I don't have my dream job, although I do enjoy what I do, but I do have my dream circumstances...I've been working at my current company for 2 years and they like me so much that they are keeping me employed even though I'm having a baby and moving out-of-state! So I get to work at home, part-time hours (that I get to choose!) so that my son doesn't have to be in daycare...it doesn't get any better than that!

  • No.  I always wanted to be an architect and due to some stupidity on my part when looking into colleges it didn't happen and I ended up in a different major.  I really regret that.

  • I love my job, but I also get to play almost every day and have summers off.  (I teach K-5 PE)
  • I'm not in my dream job right now. I'm trying to become a teacher though, and if I have to work - that's my dream job. I've always wanted to be a teacher, but I was too greedy in college and wanted to make money so I went into business. My job isn't awful - I make good money and my boss is cool. But I'm in a cubicle for 9 hrs/day at a computer. I get very bored.

I'm hoping to find a teaching job for the fall, so I dont have to come back here after the baby.

  • I am a middle school social studies teacher. ?I pretty much have my dream job. ?I taught high school for 5 years and I think that I might like high school better. ?But no matter what I love being a teacher and I left teaching for 3 years to work in an office and hated every minute of it. ?I also think owning my own little?boutique?would be cool.
  • I do! My dream job was to work from home and not have to wake up early. ;)

I don't have to deal with idiot bosses, commutes, I set my own hours. I'm home with my daughter. I nap almost daily.... ?

  • Right now? No. I'm a legal secretary and I hate desk jobs, lol.

But, I'll be done with school in about 2 years, and then I will be able to work in my dream job (occupational therapy).

  • It seems like the grass is always greener on the other side. . .I would love to be a college professor but I really don't want to go back to school to get a masters and eventually a doctorate.  But, my current job is pretty dreamy.  I'm a real estate agent.  I get to set my own hours and choose who I work with.  Most "work" doesn't start until about 10am because people don't want to look at houses before that.  You do work some evenings and weekends though, but again you can always say no.  We're going to have to see how it all works out when our little girl arrives.  DH works for Banker's Life so he has flexibility too but we'll have to get in our groove.  I'm hoping to transition into part time in the next year or two until she is in school. . .but by then we'll probably have another one on the way.
  • Not there yet, but hopefully someday. Currently I'm an Exec Assistant in a prison. I just applied to Grad School to start my Masters program to be a Speech Language Pathologist.. but that's still a few years away. With 2 kiddos and a sinking economy I'm safer here where I know that a steady paycheck is attainable. Here's to hoping though...
  • Well kinda.  I went to law school and I'm attorney and I really like it.  Not to mention I work at a firm that is pretty flexible, I work easy hours, and I like the people I work with.  On the other hand, I get bored with it sometimes.  There are days I wish I worked in journalism or television production....those are kinda my secret dream jobs.
  • This is def not my dream job.  I would love to be a Party Planner or a SBO (bar or hair salon) too!  I love planning things and all my friends tell me that is what I should be doing with my life.  Maybe if I win the lottery, I will finally have my dream job!  LOL

  • i do.  i'm a sahw (soon to be sahm) and a novelist/writer.  in fact i'm currently attempting to write a story for a contest coming up.
  • Far from it, but I have no idea what my dream job would be. :(

  • I kind of do.  I am a reading specialist!  I love to read and I love working with small groups of kids!  However, I wish I was at a better school with students/parents who care about education!  I am in the inner city and I loved teaching when I was in the suburbs.  Job security is better in the city though!

If I could pick something else I would like to be a wedding planner.  I love planning out all the details and I have helped a lot of friends with their weddings!

  • Definitely have my dream job and I damn well better. It took 22 years of school and a hell of a lot of money and hard work. I am a forensic psychologist.

  • Yep! Well, I will come June when the baby comes :) My dream job has always been to be a SAHM and that is what I'll be.

Teaching private voice and working in Church music is a close second and is what I have my degree in. I plan on doing either of those or actually going into teaching music at the HS level once my kids are in school.

  • Hmm.. dream job to me seems like movie star or famous writer or something .. so no, I don't have that.  But I do like my job a lot - I get paid well to do something I like and my boss is extremely flexible so I feel very fortunate with #2 on the way.  I'm still nervous about the economy though and hope I'm not looking for another job soon!
  • I do!  I love being able to SAH w/ my kids.  I plan on opening up my own Architecture firm from home in the next couple years too.  That way I can work in my chosen profession (that I do love), make money (but we won't count on it for bills since we are already used to living on one income), be home when my kids get home from school & not have a boss/commute/ etc.  I love Architecture because it's creative & practical & you really do impact people's lives...hopefully I'll be able to swing it.

  • Dream job?! HA! I don't even have A job these days..
  • Nope, Nope... I want to own a boutique in a different ecomony obviously. The one thing I love about my job is the freedom I have and *most* of the people I work with...
