Preschool and Movies

Just wondering, is it common practice for preschools to have a movie day every week? It really hadn't occured to me that they'd be watching movies that often in school. What's your preschool/daycare's policy on TV?

Re: Preschool and Movies

  • Alex's class never had a TV in it. I dont know how I would feel if I was paying for him to go to school and he was watching movies, especially considering the price of daycare!

  • That's what I figured too. But I'm researching schools now and so far two of them have a movie day.

  • That's interesting. Mikey goes to the daycare at my job and I have seen a tv in one of the rooms but according to my coworker, that has a son in that class, it is to play education videos. I'd be concerned about a set movie day every week.
  • Sophia gets about a half-hour of TV at daycare in the afternoons - to cool down with their milk after their outside play. That is it. I am okay with that. However, I do know that the pre-school side has a teacher who lets the kids watch a movie a day. That, to me, is not what I would be sending her to pre-school for and is ultimately laziness on the teacher's part. I think she could find something else to fit into that hour and a half. I have also heard that this teachers has the kids watch TV in the mornings until the whole class arrives. I have already told Abel that if we get that teacher come that time we will be moving Sophia to a different school.

I would be OK with one movie day a week. Its like a treat for the kids rather than a routine.

  • I used to work for a private pre-school back in the day and we all had one day a week of movie time. Though it was set up differently. Each class had team names and the teachers would get the children to work on a weekly craft project to show off on movie day. Then they would get a disney movie to see along with popcorn for the kids. The children always looked forward to movie day and it was never a problem with the parents. Though I can totally see where it would be a problem if teachers had TV's in their room or made it a daily thing. I would not be happy with that either.
