When did you switch 2 solids 1st milk 2nd??

I am nursing an older baby (9mth+) and in what I've been reading/hearing from my pedi.  Solids are becoming more and more of his dietary needs and than his milk intake during the day will start to decrease as he eats more.  When should I start offering food first??  Pedi said to make sure he gets plenty of milk in the am/pm but the mid day will become less important.

Let me know your thoughts/feedback/experiences.

  • I go by DD's cues. Some days she doesn't want the breast before having her solids lunch, but some days she still does. I still offer, though, and let her decide.

  • Around six months we were doing solids first. Pedi suggested that because she was drinking WELL over 45oz a day. When i did solids first she would eat and then have milk- she dropped back into a more normal milk consumption range in the 30's.

  • I did not until I was trying to wean some nursing sessions, so well over 12 months.  Well, since I nursed her on my lunch hour at daycare, she got lunch at 11am and usually nursed at noon.  But that wasn't until after 12 months.
