Here we go again..weight issues...

Just got back from Reid's Dr appt (it was just a weight check) and he dropped percentile's again...he's now down to the 14th....I got the same speech about feed him all the time...mix cereal in his babyfood...add some olive oil...

I had these issues when Grant was a baby (only he wasn't quite so small) I just hope they don't tell me to quit bfing to get him to gain...

  • Brandi - NO WAY would they tell you to stop bfing.  That doesn't even sound right.  Some kiddos are just small, I think.

  • I'm so sorry that you are having to deal with this. I am fortunate enough to have a pediatrician who was not overly concerned with the weight of my kids - both were/are in the 5-10% and have been their entire life.  Keep up the good work with the BF!  You can only do so much and you certainly can't force them to eat.
  • I think we are going to have that issue too. I can see it not being a problem if they are consistently in the lower percentiles like pp. However, if they keep dropping percentiles from visit to visit, at what point does it become about the baby just being skinny?

DS went from 50th at birth and 2 months, to 10-25th at 4 months. And he's probably going to be 5th at his 6 months. We've topped off with formula after BFing, give him cereal and other baby food.

Hope his weight improves soon. We were worried about this a few months ago, but Kate gained almost two pounds in a month, and we were thrilled.

  • Brandi, I understand your frustrations... we are going through the same thing. Putting olive oil in milk sounds really gross to me!  Anyway, we go for Carolne's 9 month tomorrow and the pedi we saw last time said if she isn't over 15 pounds they are going to label her failure to thrive.  So Kerrin, I may be asking you for your pedi's info if the appointment doesn't go well tomorrow.

  • Just curious, how much does he weigh?  I just took Tess for her 6 mo check up yesterday (but she's 7 mos today) and she was 16 lb 4oz and that put her just below 40%.  But, the funny thing is she is almost the exact same length and weight that Emma was when she was 1.  Emma was always in 5-10% and my pedi never acted like that was an issue.
  • At 6mo he was16lbs 2oz and in the 19th% today (7.5mo) he was 16lbs 12 oz and in the 14th% They told me they were worried because his % have been going down. I wasn't really worried at first...his and Grant's 4 and 6 mo stats were almost identical...but Grant was gaining a little more by no. I wonder if they've changed the % recently...that's crazy that at 7mo she's what Emma was a 1....

  • That's weird...at 2 weeks older Reid weighs 8 oz more than Tess but is in a way lower percentile.  I wonder if it's different for boys vs. girls?
