East coast gals I need vacation advice

DH and I are thinking about taking a short vacation and want to stay on the east coast. We live in southeast Virginia. We would take DS with us so we want somewhere that won't be too much of a hastle but need to get away for a few days.

We have talked about Charleston, Boston, D.C. and NYC (but I definitely think he's way too young for NYC). Any suggestions??? TIA!

  • Charleston would be fantastic, as would Chapel Hill or Wilmington.  Saratoga Springs is really nice too, they have horse races that could be fun for kids.

  • I have never been to Charleston, but Boston and DC are great.  I don't see why you couldn't take a baby to NYC, but it would limit your ability to do certain things like see a play.

What time of year is your trip?  Boston will have the nicest summer weather.

  • I'm a little partial to Boston but that's cuz I'm a MA gal! It's an easy city to get around in on foot and there's so much to see--the Aquarium https://www.neaq.org/index.php , shopping  https://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/, parks/Freedom Trail  https://www.cityofboston.gov/FreedomTrail/bostoncommon.asp, you can take a ride in a swan boat https://www.swanboats.com/schedules.php  There's just lots to do!

  • What about Asheville/Boone? or DC - lots of kid friendly stuff here.
  • I looove Hilton Head Island. We're going down at the end of April for DD's first official vacation... can't wait! It's such a low-key, relaxing place to go... good restaurants, golf, tennis, shopping, spas and beach. Definitely very family-friendly, too.
  • What about Savannah?  It's one of my favorite places, and is beautiful in the spring!

EDIT:  Oh, unless you're planning for a summer vacation.  Then it might be a little hot.

  • I love Charleston.  I live in the Boston area and it's a great place for vacation, but it's cold right now.

  • Hey what about Jersey?! Ocean Grove is our favorite mellow area, but there is also Atlantic City, Cape May, Seaside Heights for fun... come on up!
  • Boston is def good. You have the museum of science, the aquarium, the childrens museum as well. you can walk everywhere. Then there is the frog pond to wade in at the Boston Common. There are lots of beaches in the area and you are also not far from the Cape as well.

LOL at "Chapel Hill". What the heck are you gonna do in Chapel Hill with a kid on vacation?

I'd suggest Charleston in an instant, it's one of my fav cities, but I'd go early summer or it can get very hot. There are tons of great family friendly beaches that aren't super crowded. The Outer Banks are great. St. Augustine in FLA is awesome if you want to go that far down. All three of those places have lots of history and lots to do.

The NC mountains as PP suggested are great too (Asheville etc)

  • I would suggest Newport, RI or Narragansett, RI in the summer- not warm enough now.  Great beaches, easy to fly in and out of TF Green Airport, Providence, RI.  Tons to see and do- mansion tours, beaches, carousels, cute restaurants and hotels- or bed and breakfasts.  Very kid friendly and not as crowded/ expensive as Boston or DC.
  • I would not do Seaside Heights if you are considering NJ, I would do Point Pleasant or Cape May especially with children.  I am from Central Jersey and Seaside is really gross!

  • Thanks for all the ideas! We are going sometime between now and May. I've been to Charleston and Sanannah and loved both so those are definitely on the list
