magnesium oxide for constipation?

Anyone told they can take magnesium oxide for constipation? The nurse at my ob's office told me I can take this, but reading the back of the bottle only says its for magnesium supplement but nothing for constipation and I googled too and found nothing. TIA

Re: magnesium oxide for constipation?

  • I'm not sure about that, but I used Miralax and that worked.  You can also take colace once or twice a day if you find you get constipated a lot!

  • I was recommended this and I took it - worked like a charm as a stool softener.

The reason that it works is that the MgO is not readily absorbed/broken down in the intestines, and as it passes through them, it somehow causes loose stools.

FYI if you actually want a Mg supplement (which I did when I was TTC), try Mg-citrate.
