Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Would YOU sleep train for this??

I read some of your stories about how horrible your LOs sleep and I feel lucky that my little guy only wakes up 1-2x a night (which is tough enough on me).

So lately he's back to 1x a night--anywhere from 2:30am to 4:30am he will wake up--and eat---and EAT....and EAT.....and then he's right back to sleep no problem.  So I seriously think he's just hungry.  He's a big guy--and although he's eating 2 meals a day plus lots of bottles during daycare---it's just not enough to sustain him through the night.  He typically goes to sleep around 8pm or so (anywhere from 7:30-8:30) -while nursing.

So is it worth trying to go through the pain of Ferber or other sleep training techniques or could he REALLY be that hungry and NEEDS the food?  I obviously have a lot to read up on and learn about the reasons for it all--but my gut is saying this little one is hungry.  I just don't want to let this go on for too long and have a 2 year old that is getting up to eat snacks in the middle of the night Huh?

Re: Would YOU sleep train for this??

  • No I would not. ? We did some sleep training last month because Lily had forgotten how to self sooth and was waking 5-6 times a night. ?We got her back down to once a night to nurse and I am going to let her drop it when she is ready.??

  • Buy the Sleep Easy Solution. She talks about gentle ways to gradually wean the night feedings, while adding the calories throughout the day. I would try that over Ferber any day. Especially if he is really hungry and not just snacking.  Cutting him off from eating cold turkey like that wouldn't be very nice :o)
  • Yes. I would say if he is gaining weight so well then he doesn't NEED those calories.

  • DS just started to STTN night the week. I am excited. Part of me wonders if it is because we are giving him solids at dinner now or if he is just getting older so he can go longer. I think it may be a bit of both. Either way he used to wake up 1x a night to eat usually around 2am. MH and I didn't do any sleep training, nor did we read up on any methods, and I just chocked it up to him being hungry since his last meal was 8hrs prior..

  • i say no.  If he is eating that much, then he is hungry.

  • i wouldn't. i would only sleep train if dc was suffering from lack of sleep.

  • This sounds exactly like my DS. He goes down usually around 8 and wakes up between 3 and 4 to nurse, then sleeps till about 6:30. We've tried letting him cry a little during those wakings (like 5- 10 minutes) and sometimes he'll fall back asleep, but when he does, he winds up waking up for good at like 5 / 5:30. So, I'd rather get up and feed him and have him sleep till 6:30.
  • I am in the same boat and I have not yet.  He wakes up once a night Between 3 and 4:30 and drinks 8oz and goes right back to sleep.  It is not like he is snacking...he is hungry.  He eats 2 solid meals a day and has 32  to 40 oz of formula a day.  he is just a big boy!

I have read Ferber and the No Cry Sleep Solution and but am not ready to try yet.  He has STTN a few times over the last few weeks so I know he can do it.  But I am hesitant to try one of these methods just yet.  I think he will drop it on his own when he is ready.  So I can deal with the one wake up.  Go with your gut...whatever feels right for you.

  • DS is similar, so I do one dream feed before I go to bed.  At this feeing I let him nurse off both sides and I give him a bottle with 2 more ounces of milk.  This has allowed him to STTN from 9pm - 6am every night.  My son is on the skinny side of the growth charts, so if he does ever wake up in the middle of the night and wants to eat, I feed him.  He can use the calories.

Ferber does not suggest you cut him off cold turkey, but instead that you add a half an hour to the start of each feeding. So if he wakes up at 2 to eat, when he wakes up the next night, you hold him off until 2;30, then 3, until he evenually doesn't have a night time feeding. Just an FYI.
