SUNSHINEGIRL & BRANDIGREENE - Anyone else with helmet experience

Just wanted to ask you guys something else. I have my last follow up appt at CHOA to decide about the helmet. Did you have scans prior to making the decision or was that just part of making the actual helmet? Did you see an actual Dr. at your appts? I have only seen a Physician Assistant even though my appt is with one of the Drs. The scheduling office there has been less than impressive, but I really would like to talk to and see an actual Dr. before we make this important decision. What do you guys think?

I'm starting to get so nervous b/c I feel in my gut that DD's head hasn't improved since her appt. 1.5 months ago and they will recommend the helmet. I still don't even know if Kaiser will cover it or not.

Re: SUNSHINEGIRL & BRANDIGREENE - Anyone else with helmet experience

  • In our case the scans were part of the helmet process - we knew we wanted to do it and get it over with.  No, we didnt see a doctor, we saw a therapist.  Yes, I agree that the scheduling there blows, but once you get on a schedule to be seen you really dont have to deal with them anymore.  The STAR machine is the only one in the Southeast area so I guess they dont feel like they need to offer good customer service or something...lol!!   As far as seeing a doctor, I'm not sure that there is actually one in that office to be honest - I believe they are all therapists.

Honestly, there's really no need to be nervous.  But waiting to see what happens is only increasing the amount of time your child will spend in the helmet, so I'd advise you to just do it if your gut tells you to.   As part of the process, they will verify your insurance benefits before making the helmet.  Did Kaiser refer you or did you go on your own?

  • Kaiser referred me and the PA I saw said she thinks Kaiser covers it except deductible which would be great b/c she doesn't have a deductible so it would be free. I agree with you about just doing it if we are going to. I was ready to make a move las time, but they wanted to wait til she was 9 months b/c that was kind of the cut off in their mind of the longest we could wait and still expect excellent results. I don't know why I am obsessing about it. Last night I told DH that I thought she would have to get it and he was like "So." He doesn't see it as a big deal and I guess I shouldn't either. A girl on another board equated it to getting braces and I guess when you look at it that way it isn't a big deal.

  • Thats a good way to think about it....although the helmet doesnt hurt! :)   Lord, I remember getting my braces tightened....eeeek!  We didnt have to pay out of pocket for Harrison or Avery's helmet, so that is a relief.  They are pricey little things!  Who are you seeing at CHOA?  We love love love Ed!   Good luck with your decision.

Check out this blog--one of their twins is using a helmet, and the mom has been blogging about their experience, etc.
