Has anyone rented the hospital grade pump?

Instead of buying another pump. I have the single electric medela pump but it's so noisy and I only got 1/2 an ounce when I pumped for 30 mins. 1 once on a good day. I'm going to BF most of the time but would like to pump & store milk for when I'm out of the house for a few hours, so DH would be feeding the LO. Has anyone rented the hospital pump? Is it worth it to rent or should I just buy another pump? Which would come out cheaper; spending $300 on a pump or renting one? thanks

Re: Has anyone rented the hospital grade pump?

  • Depends on how long you'll be BFing, I suppose. The pump rental at our hospital was more expensive over the long haul than the $250 PISA that I bought.

  • My SIL gave me her Medela PISA. She was an exclusive pumper for 2 kids so I was worried that the pump may be "worn out"  I rented a hospital grade Ameda for $55/mth and I actually pumped less than with the PISA.  So IMO, No it's not worth it.
  • I have both.  I am using my SIL's PISA at work (I pump there once/day) and a hospital grade one at home (again, I pump there once/day).  I get an average of twice as much when I use the hospital grade pump.  I know there are lots of factors involved there, but I really like the hospital grade one much better.  My dad works at the hospital, so he got it for me for free, but I would've rented one regardless.  Maybe you can rent one for a month and try it out?
  • I had both with ds #1 (hospital pump and Medela PIS), and I didn't have a difference between them.  I had borrowed the Medela from my cousin to use when I returned to work, but now I'm a sahm, so this time around I just rented the hospital pump.  I'ts $40 a month.
  • I've been renting one since the beginning of the year and its great!

I can get twice as much and twice as fast than I did with my Medela Swing pump.

  • Same here- I rented one for about a month, but ended up getting a used (yaaaaa I know of the risk- but wasn't looking to suck up the $300 for a new PISA) on craigslist.org, which cost me less than the monthly rental fee of $55 for the Symphony Pump and honestly - other than the quieter factor I haven't been able to tell much difference between the PISA advanced and the Symphony... Also- check with your insurance, it turned out my insurance covered a brand new pump or the monthly rental fee as DD had latching difficulty- all it took was a script from the Pedi!
