2nd Trimester

I'm scared to death....

....of the gestational diabetes test that I have tomorrow.  I know it's just a little sugary drink but I'm absolutely positive that I'm going to have GD and that it's going to mean horrible things for me and my baby.  Anyone have any advice on how to get through tomorrow?  Anyone else been diagnosed with GD?

Re: I'm scared to death....

  • I thought that the drink was delicious. I was diagnosed with GD with DD and while I was devestated at the time it really wasn't that bad. I was able to control it with diet alone and just had to test my glucose levels 6 times a day. I will most likely have it agin with this pregnancy but I'm not worried at all. Good luck!

  • If you do get GD its not the end of the world for most it is a diet change, checking your blood and maybe a pill to take. I had it with DD and she was perfect when she came out 5lbs 13oz at 37 weeks. One of the perks though is you get nst test every week and get to see your baby every week. It just sounds horrible but its not that bad, there are much worse things that could happen in pregnancy.
  • The test itself is not bad at all, I actually think the drink was pretty good (tasted like a Sunkist).

I do not have GD, but from what I understand it is not a big deal at all.  Just some minor changes in your diet.  Nothing to be "scared to death" about.

And if you fail the 1 hour, don't stress.  A LOT of people (inlcuding myself and nearly everyone I know) failed the 1 hour and then passed the 3 hour.
This time I passed the 1 hour, woot!

    Good luck!

  • The drink isn't too bad. Make sure it is ICE COLD! It kinda tastes like orange pop, then at the end it is a little too much.  I got diagnosed with GD and I thought it was the worst thing ever at first.  But, really it was super easy and really kept my diet in check.  I ate the healthiest I did the whole pg and actually ended up eating more than what I did.   It is a great diet to follow pregnant or not.  My son was not large since I kept my sugars regulated, although I would indulge a couple of times.  He was 6#15oz. and his sugars were great and he is perfectly healthy!!!  Good luck!
  • I was positive that I was going to have GD too...but after i failed the 1 hr test...I passed the 2nd test with flying colors. the drink isn't that bad either...just tastes like flat soda. Try not to worry. And tomorrow for breakfast, don't have any carbs, just protein.

  • I am right there with you! I am so scared I am going to have it too. I go tomorrow for my doctor visit.
  • Why are you "absolutely positive" that you will have GD??????

And if you are, it is not the worst thing in the world. Trust me, there will be a million things in parenting to be scared to death about, this probably shouldn't be one of them. Worry about it after you get the results.

  • Seriously? It's really not that big of a deal. I fail that test even when I'm not pregnant. I'm on meds for GD and have been for several weeks. I had GD with DD too. IF you have it, it simply means you and your doc need to keep a close eye on you. You should be eating healthy and exercising (as much as you are able) anyway with or without GD. Don't stress, chances are that you don't have it and if you do, you will be just FINE.
