I thought of this long after I saw the "wish you'd known" post. I WISH I had known how great a baby nurse would be. It is the one thing that I used to laugh at before I had DS that now I look upon in awe as wonderful foresight in a mum (if she can afford it of course).
I visited a friend before I had DS and she had a baby nurse and a newborn (her first, she was an older mum and she'd had a c section after 48 hours labour but they'd booked the nurse long before they knew that would happen).
I remember thinking, hey, why can't you just take care of the kid? I mean you're BFing anyway...
NOW I am contrite. She was so right, and lucky she could easily afford it and had a spare bedroom for the baby nurse.
They're not common where I live now, most people seem to take the attitude I used to have. But if I ever ever have another I'm getting one. Don't care if I have to sell furniture on ebay to do it :-)

Re: POLL Did you have a baby nurse?
I think it's a nice idea even just for peace of mind. I had NO idea what I was doing and my mother's/MIL's advice was always the opposite of what I read or was told in pre-birth classes! It would be nice having someone for at least a week to "show me the ropes".
However, although painful, it is "somewhat" rewarding to figure it all out on your own.
I had 3 c-sections and never needed help afterwards besides from my DH...he was extremely helpful...to the point that I was nearly pampered. he'd get the baby, bring teh baby to me, I'd nurse, then he'd change the baby's diaper and put the baby back to bed....what more would an overpaid nurse done??? My mom or MIL never stayed with me. I wouldn't have been comfortable with THEIR help, let alone a strangers.
