Dr. won't give me antibiotics!

I do respect the fact that she is being cautious, but she did a CBC blood test and waiting for results to see if it is viral or bacterial (I have a chest cold). I commented that couldn't I have something she would have like augmentin? She said it could cause her stomach upset so not unless it is bacterial would she even consider it. I never heard of that, but I guess I understand.

Also, as a kicker, I haven't had my AF since 2/20 (really just a couple days late) so she did a PG test in case. Really not much of a chance but will not give anything unless it is neg.

  • Well, I understand her not giving you an antibiotic if its viral (because it wouldn't help) but there are safe options for women who are PG and women who are BFing.  So, if you have something bacterial there's something out there she could give you!

  • They could give me amoxicillin or something right?
  • Yep.  Amoxicillan is safe for BFing AND PG women, unless your DC has a penicillin allergy.   There are many other safe ones too!

  • yes, there are antibiotics that are safe for bf and pregnancy, but i really respect your doc for waiting for culture results before giving abx.  there are a lot of nasty abx-resistant bacteria these days (ie- MRSA, ORSA, and VRE) that are becoming rather dangerous due to antibiotic overuse.  too many physicians have given abx for non-bacterial infections, which allowed the mutations causing resistance to occur.  the less the general public uses abx (esp. when not necessary) the better.

  • Yeah I just feel like garbage.  I do totally respect her.  DD had Augmentin before so since that has amoxicillin I would imagine either would be ok.  Right now I will just drink some tea.  Not too much!
