too quiet for baby at night??

we have been home from the hospital for 2 nights now.  DS is sleeping great in between feedings during the day.  he doesn't mind the noise of the TV or music/ us talking at all. nighttime is a different story.  once we get settled in w/ him in our room to go to bed he fidgets like crazy.  I was thinking just now, maybe it's too quiet for him?? he is used to the constant noise of the NICU....nurses moving about , buzzing of monitors etc.  Anyone else have this experience w/ their baby when you were first home??

Re: too quiet for baby at night??

  • DS was in a private NICU room and his door was shut most of the time because he would dsat if any loud noises were around so he was not used to all that noise and he is still a very light sleeper to this day.  However, he was used to the vibrating white noise of his oscillator and so we found it helpful to play music for him to go to sleep to and that really helped.  It is now just part of our routine and is a very calming way to get him to know it is bed time at night.  Good luck and he will adjust to being home.
  • yup - jack was like that too! we now have a fan going constantly in his room - provides just enough noise, plus the fan reduces the risk of SIDS. win-win!

we've always used white noise with Emma, but she was just like that when she came home. It could also be because babies use sleep as a coping mechanism and when things are too much during the day he just turns off, but at night it's a little more peaceful so he feels more comfortable. It also takes them a little while to get their days and nights figured out.

    good luck!

  • The same thing hapened with us once he came home. I wound up putting the tv on in our room until he fell asleep. Even now he needs white noise to fall asleep.

  • Max slept much better once we got a noise machine for him... we have a "Slumber Sheep" that a friend gave us, and I love it!
  • DD listens to the "heart beat" setting on our sound machine. Definitely worth the $20. She loves it.

  • DS sleeps through noise and quiet, so it hasn't really been an issue for us.  But the NICU staff did warn us that we may need to get a noise machine or turn on the tv or something like that to get him to sleep.  Jokingly, I told them they need to record the NICU sounds and sell a CD.
