Babies: 0 - 3 Months

XP: 1m old gasping for breath

Dash has started doing this thing in the past two days where it sounds like he is gasping for breath ... yet his monitor isn't going off, he isn't turning blue, and he seems absolutely fine. No fever, etc. Just a long inhalation with a squeak to it.

DH thinks it's just a "Dash thing" that he does now ... DH insisted Dash only did this when he was eating or had to burp, but I kept pointing out when I heard it (like sitting in the car seat this morning).

So, in the absence of actually HEARING how it sounds, would this be something to call the pediatrician about? Or is it a normal baby thing (or a preemie thing) that I shouldn't be overly worried about?

  • DS used to do that sometimes, but since he is a preemie, and did have some issues, I would definitely call the pedi and ask about it. Better safe than sorry :)

  • I believe its pretty normal.  DD does it too.  Its pretty common up until their first birthday.  BUT if you're seriously concerned, definitely ask Dash's pedi.

  • DD does that a lot, and I asked the pedi about it. She said it was normal. But, like pp said, call the doc and talk to them if it will set your mind at ease.
  • I guess I'll call on Monday. But I'm glad to hear he's not the only one who does this!

  • my DS just started doing it too and he is 1 month as well!, he has his 1 month check up on Monday so it's on my list of questions.
  • dd makes that sound when she eats and it would scare the heck out of me but she has always done it and they heard it in the nicu and thought nothing of it....does he have reflux?

nope, no reflux. And he wasn't making the noise two weeks ago. It's new.
